AT&T to also use HSPA+ in certain locations

Posted by davomrmac March - 13 - 2010 - Saturday ADD COMMENTS

Most United States carriers will be rolling out some flavor of “4G” technology this year except for AT&T which has chosen to wait till 2011 for LTE. AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega thinks there will be a shortage of LTE devices in 2010 and chose to wait till 2011 when they will be widely available.

So how does AT&T fill the gap till next year while all the other carriers beef up their networks? A recent interview with Fierce Broadband Wireless suggest AT&T will follow T-Mobile’s strategy of using HSPA+.

Mr. De la Vega said his company will deploy HSPA+ (which is capable of 21 Mbps) in certain locations, but they are still working out the details on which markets to cover.

If AT&T is holding off on LTE till 2011 for more handsets, does that mean we could see more HSPA+ devices this year? T-Mobile is launching their HSPA+ network tomorrow and expects to have broad national deployment of its faster mobile web by the end of 2010. Their first device is a USB modem, but it is widely expected T-Mobile has a surprise HSPA+ handset to pair with their very fast network.

Is anyone else holding out on 4G data speeds for their next Android handset? Sprint will have a 4G handset this summer, but surely T-Mobile and Verizon have something up their sleeve.

More Evidence of a Sprint Nexus One?

Posted by MobileDeveloperTV March - 13 - 2010 - Saturday 2 COMMENTS

With the Nexus One headed to Verizon and Vodafone in the coming weeks, customers on other networks are starting to wonder if and when they’re provider will be offering the phone.  One such carrier, Sprint could really use a new Android handset with high end specs like Nexus One.

One of our readers was recently in an online chat with a member of the Sprint team.  Being that he will be ready to get a new handset soon, the subject of the phone came up.

Here’s the interesting part of the transcribed chat:

03/12/2010 11:40:46PM   Rick Bradley: “Questions about upgrading my existing phone”
03/12/2010 11:41:17PM   Agent (Brad M): “May I have your concern in detail?”
03/12/2010 11:42:58PM   Rick Bradley: “Yeah. I’m due for to upgrade my phone to a new handset in the next couple of weeks. I definately want to get the best phone available. I have heard through the rumor mill that Sprint MIGHT be offering the nexus one with google possibly as soon as april”
. I’d really like to use this phone and I’d hate to have to go to verizon.. is there any chance you could confirm or deny this rumor of sprint carrying the nexus one ?
03/12/2010 11:44:08PM   Agent (Brad M): “Sure. Let me check this.”
03/12/2010 11:45:16PM   Rick Bradley: “thank you for checking”
03/12/2010 11:45:28PM   Agent (Brad M): “You are welcome.”
03/12/2010 11:47:02PM   Agent (Brad M): “I am sorry. We do not have any update on the launch of this phone right now.”
03/12/2010 11:47:59PM   Agent (Brad M): “However, I have notated your account.”
03/12/2010 11:48:13PM   Rick Bradley: “in what capacity ?”
03/12/2010 11:48:43PM   Agent (Brad M): “Once we launch this phone, you will be notified with our promotional advertisement.”
03/12/2010 11:49:52PM   Session Ended

While this is not proof of anything concrete, it certainly sounds like Sprint expects to offer the Nexus One in some capacity.   Whether that’s directly through the carrier or more in a supportive role has yet to be figured out.  Also, the echoes a conversation someone else had with the carrier just a few weeks back.

What do you guys think?  Excited by the prospects of the super phone on the Now Network?

Might We Suggest…

According to Electronista yesterday, Vodafone has killed off its paid-for GPS service Wayfinder, resulting in the loss of around 90 jobs in the turn-by-turn navigation department.

“We could not charge for something that others gave away for free” Vodafone UK spokeslady Anna Cloke told Sweden’s Sydsvenkan, in an unusually and brutally honest assessment of the situation.

And that’s Google Maps Navigation, one of the reasons why paid-for GPS is on the way out – along with Nokia’s recent move to start giving away its Ovi Maps tool.

And isn’t it enough just to have a look at good-old traditional Google Maps every few miles to make sure you’re on track anyway?

Acer Liquid now available SIM-free for £284

This is better – a price starting with the number “2″ makes the idea of shelling-out for a SIM-free contract-less Android phone so much more palatable.

The retailer is UK-based PixMania, which is currently selling the critically-deemed-adequate Acer Liquid for £290 – and is knocking that down to £284 thanks to an online promotion it’s running at the moment.

Here it is. It’s the white-trimmed variant that’s on offer:

We’re about 92% sure that the Acer Liquid S100 is the same phone as the Acer Liquid, and indeed the Acer Liquid A1 – Acer got itself in a bit of a mess with model numbers when announcing the thing. So don’t worry about getting the wrong version with a 1″ screen or anything.

If you want the black variant of the Acer Android phone, that’s yours for an extra tenner.

WEEKLY WRAP: The Android news we missed or deliberately snubbed

Here’s a little round-up of a few of the more “mainstream” mentions of Android from the various media portals of world this week, ones that we didn’t mention for our own bizarre little reasons.

For a relaxing Saturday read.

Microsoft plants Bing on Google-free Chinese Androids
A dull fact-based story we couldn’t be bothered writing up, to be frank. It’s Bing, it’s China, it’s Motorola. We are not that bored yet.

HTC create another Legend
Mainstream UK tabloid ‘The Sun’ has really been pushing Android of late – last week it plugged the MILESTONE, this week it’s the turn of the Legend. Someone at The Sun obviously wants to blag a free upgrade or two…

Forgive us for not mentioning the very latest in HOT South Korean licensing regulatory body movements.

Android NDK taps into high-speed graphics
Didn’t write anything about this, as part of our new policy to not write about anything we don’t entirely understand.

Malware found on out-of-the-box Vodafone HTC Magic smartphone
Virus-found-on-thing is hardly news. We doubt Vodafone PUT IT THERE in a deliberate attack on its consumers. In fact the story even SAYS THAT, yet still people reported it like it was some sort of scandal.

That’s enough for this week. We’re starting to get angry and write in capital letters :(
