T-Mobile’s Voice Plus Beta Has Started

Posted by Lawrence Chang March - 11 - 2010 - Thursday ADD COMMENTS

After nearly a month of waiting,  T-Mobile has started their Voice Plus Beta program for G1 owners.  Emails are being sent out this evening to those of you who signed up to participate in a new service to manage calls and voicemail on your Android phone.

Heads up!  To install the application on your phone, you will need to update the G1’s software, wiping your phone in the process.  T-Mobile does provide a few steps to walk you through the process so you can backup your data.  If you run into any snags, you’re advised to not call Customer Care.  Dialing 611 will not do you a bit of good.  Instead, users are directed to specific channels for feedback and troubleshooting.

Features of Voice Plus Beta:

  • Call Divert: Carve out a little peace and quiet by sending selected numbers straight to voicemail without ringing your phone.
  • Call Defer: Let callers know you’re busy and schedule a convenient time for you to call them back.  Send them a text message that acknowledges their call and that you will respond at a later time.
  • Visual Voicemail: Easily manage your voicemail! View a list of who left a voicemail, with the time of the message and its length.  Choose which to listen to now and which to review later.
  • City ID: Get more information about the calls you receive.  The city and state information of incoming calls is displayed.

FlyScreen just dropped a great new feature into their Android lock-screen app.  FourSquare integration allows user to check-in from their handsets without the need of opening an actual app.  For those of you who are fanatical about maintaining your “mayor” status, you can appreciate how important time is.

This “version 1″ of FourSquare support also allows users to search nearby for more places providing they have GPS enabled on the phone.  Other features include the ability to keep an eye on your friends, share your update with social networking services, and shouting. Wonder what they’ll add to the next version?

If you already have FlyScreen, look for an update in the Android Market.  If you’ve never heard of the app but would  like to try it out, simply scan the barcode below with your Android handset!

HTC Incredible Poised for CTIA

Posted by Michael Trimarchi March - 11 - 2010 - Thursday 1 COMMENT

The HTC Incredible has been seen in the wild, yet again, leading us to believe the handset has been prepped and readied for a CTIA announcement.  Dressed in Verizon black and red, this super phone has an awful lot going on under the hood.  If you look at the bottom right of the battery cover you will see the Verizon logo silk-screened in the corner. We’d be very surprised if CTIA comes and goes without a word from anyone.

We’ve scoured over 107 pages of the AndroidForums post where these images come from and have collected some specs.  Since nothing is confirmed by HTC or Verizon, these details are subject to change.

With that out of the way, here’s what we can expect out of the Incredible:

  • 1 GHz Snapdragon processor
  • 3.7 inch AMOLED WVGA 800×480
  • 512MB ROM | 1GB RAM
  • 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash and autofocus
  • Android 2.1 | Sense UI
  • Optical track pad
  • 1300 mAh battery
  • 8GB MicroSDHC card
  • FM Tuner
  • Dimensions: 117.5 mm (L) x 58.5 mm (w) x 11.9 mm (T)

So… who wants one?

No Verizon 4G handsets till summer 2011

Posted by InecomCompany March - 11 - 2010 - Thursday 1 COMMENT

Sprint is releasing their first 4G handset this summer, but Verizon just announced they are waiting till 2011 (when their LTE network will be more built out). Verizon recently completed LTE trials in Boston and Seattle and expects to roll out 4G speeds to 25-30 markets by year’s end.

In their 4G LTE tests, Verizon reported 40-50 Mbps downstream and 20-25 Mbps up. Those are the fastest mobile speeds we have seen from any U.S. carrier, but real world performance is going to be less than that. Verizon maintains that their LTE network will be able to produce average download speeds of 5-12 Mbps and upload speeds of 2-5 Mbps.

It looks like most carriers’ 4G networks will provide speeds around the same ballpark so coverage area is going to be key.

By the end of 2010, we expect the 4G coverage to look like this:

  • AT&T 4G (LTE):  LTE trials in late 2010, deployment in 2011
  • Sprint 4G (WiMax):  120 million
  • T-Mobile “4G” (HSPA+):  206 million (Note: T-Mobile has not confirmed they will call their HSPA+ network 4G)
  • Verizon 4G (LTE):  100 million (will double in 2011)

Unfortunately, it looks like Verizon will be moving to tiered data pricing by the time LTE is available. Verizon’s CTO Anthony Melone hinted at this when he told the Wall Street journal, “as much data as you can consume is the big issue that has to change.”

T-Mobile will have the largest “4G” coverage this year, so we expect they will have a HSPA+ handset to take advantage of it. They will offer their first HSPA+ device, the webConnect Rocket USB modem, starting this Sunday.

If you had to pick a new carrier today and were basing your decision only on getting a 4G handset, which one would you choose?

Poor man’s Nexus One headed to India?

Posted by Lawrence Chang March - 11 - 2010 - Thursday ADD COMMENTS

Consider this a complete rumor, but Techtree is reporting that Google might be working on a “scaled down” version of the Nexus One for new markets like India. They claim this new device will be slimmer than the N1 and speculate the camera and internal memory specs will be reduced.

I’m having a hard time believing the source, but we know Google will be introducing more models in their phone store and adding more carriers later this year. For all we know, they could be talking about a modded version of the HTC Legend that would include stock Android instead of Sense UI.

Google’s Eric Tseng is leading a panel next week to discuss the Nexus One strategy so maybe we will learn more soon.
