Ask yourself these questions … Despite your enthusiasm for the the little green robot, do only your closest friends know you own an Android device? Do you worry that most tech-indifferent people STILL don’t know what Android is? Do you feel left out when the water-cooler talk turns to the latest iPhone OS release? If you answered yes to any of these questions, chances are you are a victim of InvisiDroid Syndrome. Now, before you begin running for the triple-antibiotic cream, realize that your suffering MIGHT only be temporary. Granted, you didn’t really do anything to contract this pain and suffering … but some others are not so innocent. Smartphone carriers and manufacturers haven’t really promoted the Android OS as the “special sauce” that powers their amazing new phones. You would be hard pressed to recall ANY television spot that even mentions the word Android in connection with the Hero, G1, MyTouch3G, etc. And, who could compete with those clever “there’s an app for that” iPhone commercials that Apple keeps running (aside from the latest “there’s a map for that”)? Well, the Android community can … and here’s how. For the corporate members of the Android community, a few ideas that should increase Android awareness, as well as their profits: 1) The Freebie – What does Apple (widely recognized as the style king of pop-culture promotion) include with every Mac/iPod/etc.? An innocently placed free sticker. No instructions on what to do with it, or restrictions upon its use. Just an attractive, sturdy sticker that tells the world, “Hey, I’m an Apple fan!” Cellular carriers could similarly hand out their own themed freebie that sports the dapper green dude, as well. 2) The Common Ground – How many thousands of times have you been confronted with the phrase, “Intel Inside”? From television ads, to magazines, computer boxes, and, even computer cases, the pc manufacturers of the world rallied behind that common badge of quality. Android manufacturers (as well as OHA members) need to do the same. 3) The Mention – Android manufacturers and cellular carriers need to employ a basic memorization technique that emphasizes repetition. A simple mention of the “A” word in promotional materials from these disparate members of the Android community would benefit ALL members. Now is not the time to be neo-proprietary. And, for the common folk (with an uncommon interest in the Android world) … 1) Wear Your Support on Your Sleeve – Whether AndroidGuys.com, or another one of the fine Android sites, support them by purchasing one of their branded shirts to wear proudly whilst negotiating your daily routine. And if you are a shirt designer, consider using a stock Android robot somewhere in your design, or, at least, include your domain name for the casually curious. Additonally, for crying out loud, Google … start selling Android shirts along with the shirts of all of your other corporate identities. It all starts conversations and raises awareness. 2) The Not-so Freebie – Consider purchasing an Android logo sticker for the back of your phone. Or, the back of your laptop. Or, the back of your pet’s sweater. Just show the love. 3) Use Your ‘bot to it’s Fullest – Nothing breeds desire like watching a friend or co-worker doing something cool on their Android phone. Maybe Google or HTC will never pony up the cheddar for prime-time television spots like Apple does for the iPhone. Maybe carriers will continue assuming that people wouldn’t care about the OS in the only digital device they always carry with them … But, we don’t have to wait for some corporate monolith to promote the most exciting mobile platform ever. We, the energized Android consumers, can stop the InvisiDroid plague by planting the seeds of awareness, one sticker or shirt at a time. Go green!
While walking the floor at CTIA09, we spotted the RealVNC logo and wandered over to see what they had to offer for Android. Turns out a lot. RealVNC was showing off their new cross-platform desktop to mobile control scheme. Using your desktop, you can wirelessly connect to and control a mobile device complete with touch input and hard key access. The potential uses here are many. A company could use RealVNC control at an enterprise level to assist with technical issues on their employee’s phone or provide support for a confused user. The entire screen of the mobile device is shown in real time on the desktop, giving the help desk or service tech instant insight into the device without needing to be anywhere near it. Check out the video below for a quick preview of the service.

All the excitement around today’s news of a Barnes & Noble eReader running Android may end up being for naught. According to IREX Technologies , their new DR800SG series eReader is going to be the device that Barnes & Noble uses for their Kindle-killer. This soon-to-be released unit packs an 8.1-inch, touch-screen and multi-mode 3G capabilities powered by Verizon Wireless. The Barnes & Noble eBook strategy is very much aligned with IREX’s approach to the market. IREX’s open platform , powered by Barnes & Noble’s comprehensive eBookstore, is an appealing proposition for people who love to read. Barnes & Noble is the world’s largest bookseller, so we understand how to create a great shopping experience for people looking for simple and convenient access to their favorite subjects, authors and material. – William J. Lynch, president of BN.com Unfortunately, the open platform used for the device doesn’t appear to be Android. As pointed out by Jaap A. Haitsma, the eReader uses GNOME as the OS. You can write programs for these devices by installing the SDK . I’ve tried it a while ago and it works pretty nicely. I only find it a pity that IREX doesn’t advertise this at all at their main website . We did some digging around the IREX site for Android only to come up completely empty-handed. This is not to say definitively that this is the same device the WSJ is talking about. In fact, that’s where it gets muddy. The Journal says that the screen size is 6 inches and that the carrier will be AT&T. Awfully conflicting stuff if it’s the same product. Our own Jose Salviati did a bit of sleuthing today and here’s what he found out Excited about the possibility of an Android based eReader from Barnes and Noble I reached out to the bookstore giant from New York. Why not go to the source, right? Unfortunately, the response from B&N was very politically-correct; no admissions, no denials. “Barnes & Noble has made no announcement about a device.” Mary Ellen Keating Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications & Public Affairs for Barnes and Noble told me. “Barnes & Noble believes that readers should have access to the books in their digital library from any device, anywhere, at anytime.” What better platform for the “anywhere, anytime” device than Android, right Mary Ellen? . With Kindle sales projected to be 1 billion in 2010 it makes sense that Barnes and Noble is at least looking at devices to get a piece of the eReader pie. Android as the platform of choice for this mystery device also makes sense. For now though the official word is mum. More to come, I’m sure. The plot thickens! The truth is out there, somewhere! Mary Ellen Keating mentioned the IREX device to me when we communicated earlier. Now, it’s always dangerous to read intent into an email but her reply only listed the IREX device along side others they intent to support. Keating did not single it out as the one they would put their name on. We are supporting many devices i.e. Plastic Logic’s forthcoming device, Irex’s new device, iphone and ipod touch, blackberry, and PCs. This is where we throw it back to you… do you think these are the same devices ? Is Android going to be part of the picture? Thanks for the tip Carl!
On August 25th, 2009, 30 Android developers got together at the Fast Company offices to participate in the NYC Android Developers Meetup. The Meetup was organized by the team at Medialets . Medialets is an innovative company that provides a rich media advertising and analytics platform for mobile. Like quite a few others, this was my first Android meetup. I wasn’t sure what to expect. After introductions and some lively discussion about whether Donut would run on our G1s, we learned that there were 5 apps ready to be demonstrated. Of the 5 apps shown that night, 4 are in ADC2. The feedback provided and the opportunity to see other apps and discuss them was valuable for everyone. Will any of the NYC apps I saw that night make to to round 2 of ADC2? We’ll have to wait and see, but I think it’s possible. Let me get right to the apps: Balance the Beer Like it sounds, a fun game to use your phone as a tray and a balance a beer. Play with friends and the loser buys the next round. The best part? Since it was developed by the NYC Java User’s Group, they’ve made it open source. Get the source code . BFF Photo BFF Photo is a Facebook app for viewing your photos and friend photos. You can upload photos and videos from your phone to Facebook – no USB or computer required. This is an app that I developed. For the demo that night, I showed this video . The app has changed since then. A little more on that later. BubbleBeats BubbleBeats is a new and interesting way to make playlists on your phone. After learning about BubbleBeats at the meetup, I did a review for AndroidGuys . BubbleBeats was developed by Jason Van Anden. Jason is an artist and inventor whose work includes the robots Neal and Iona . Lucid Lucid is a wacky, dreamy game. Your goal is to navigate baby Hermin through the dreamscape world and get him through the night without waking him up. I’ve made it though level 9, but not 10. Team Lucid is comprised of NYU students who conceived the game as part of the first Annual Global Game Jam. PrimoSpot Parking The only app shown that night that is not in ADC2. PrimoSpot is a local app for Boston and NY (so far!). With parking so important in those cities, this app provides the often complex parking rules for a particular street right on your phone. It also includes garages and prices. The team made the decision to skip ADC2 since this was a local app. PrimoSpot Parking Swift Swift speaks for itself, it is the “The fastest, leanest, meanest Twitter app.” Swift is a fast and very polished Twitter app. Sebastian Delmont is the developer for Swift and I learned a few things from him that night. He talked about looking at the Android source code as the best way to learn and develop great apps. That is not always an easy path, but it is good advice. He talked about releasing code into the market to get feedback. I noticed that on the night of the meetup and for ADC2, that Swift was at version 0.4. Releasing a beta and calling it a beta may be a way to encourage constructive feedback. The quality of the apps at the meetup made me long for more time to improve BFF Photo for ADC2. Like many others, my app was created with ADC2 in mind. The deadline forces brutal decisions to be made about what features to include and when to stop everything and just submit the app. My app and most others have seen several updates since ADC2 and that’s a good thing. Can NYC be a creative and technical hub for Android development? Maybe. There are a lot of Java developers in NY and surrounding areas; there are a lot of talented people. The quality of the apps at the meetup and an interest group that included students, artists, and seasoned programmers tells me that there just might be some great apps coming from the Big Apple.

As we talked about the show and what we had thought of the first day, he said what I had been thinking all day. The crowd felt kind of light and, it seemed, that many of the exhibitors were just talking about their iPhone Apps.
The Dell phone uses Google Inc.'s Android mobile- operating system , said the people briefed on the matter. The phone, like Apple Inc.'s iPhone, has a touch screen instead of a keypad as well as a tiny camera, these people said. ... While the OS is certainly less polished, the many different configurations and carrier agnosticism are certainly plusses. It is hard not to ask: Is Android the new Windows? Perhaps it is time Apple starts talking with other carriers? ...

Update (16:10) : Found the official Sprint video for the Moment. Enjoy this while we wait for our HD video to upload. The Internet in the media center is slow. Update (16:00) : We got our hands on a special unit and shot some good HD footage. I got a complete walkthrough showing the case off and battery. The Moment features a 1440 mAh battery which should provide plenty of juice. Samsung has not provided a complete list of specs yet, but I was told we can have access to them later tonight. Stay tuned for more details. Update (12:30) : I was wandering around the Samsung booth area and bumped into Jack Seeley from Samsung. No one else knew anything about Android phones, but Mr. Seeley turned out to be an expert on the Moment. The 800 MHz CPU found in the moment is a Samsung S3C6410 . This is a Samsung built ARM11 processor. Unlike the Qualcomm MSM7K single chipset found in the other Android phones, Samsung has a separate ARM11 cpu and modem chipset. The Samsung Moment will feature 512 MB ROM and 256 MB RAM. (Same as Moto devices) The Moment will ship with Android 1.5. Update will be released by Samsung and available as a PC update. I was told to expect Android 1.6 for the Samsung Moment in 2010. This is disappointing for hardcore Android fans, but the casual user will care less. The Moment is a Sprint exclusive. Samsung said a Sprint exclusive such as this is not likely to ship in the UK, but could be available in Canada and Mexico. I would still expect a similar model sometime in the future for UK Android fans. Update (11:50) : Flickr gallery is up . More photos coming soon. We got some HD video recorded, but it might be hard to upload from the event. I asked about the 800 MHz cpu and they said it was a dedicated applications processor (not really saying much). Trying to get more info on the exact specs. Update (11:45) : Samsung employees are demoing the phone, but won’t let us hold it. I helped one of the Samsung girls navigate to the About Phone screen. The demo versions of the Moment are running Android 1.5. I will try to find out if Android 1.6 will be available at launch. Pics are coming up next. Update (11:30) : We just sat through the presentation of the Samsung Moment and got the release date and price. The Moment will be availalbe November 1, 2009 at Sprint stores and Best Buy. The phone will sell for $179.99 (after $50 instant savings and $100 mail in rebate). The Moment features basically the same software as what was available on Sprint’s other Android phone (HTC Hero). Sprint Navigator, Sprint TV, NFL Mobile Live, Nascar, and Visual Voicemail are all included. Customers can sign up for notification from Sprint at http://sprint.com/moment Update (9:30) : We are sitting at the CTIA keynote waiting for the special Samsung press event to start. We knew Samsung was unveiling a new mobile device and had speculated it was the InstinctQ phone for Sprint. It looks like our guess was right, because Samsung Mobile just sent out a press release which announced the Samsung Moment phone. Details are limited, but the specs that have been revealed include: 3.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen display 800MHz processor QWERTY keyboard that slides out horizontally 3.2 megapixel camera WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS This phone is Android powered and features a QWERTY keyboard so we expect this is the device everyone was calling the Samsung InstinctQ. A tipster told us the device is expected to launch on Sprint before Black Friday (November 27, 2009). We will be attending the press event and will update this post soon with pictures and videos of the device. I will try to get a complete specs list as well. If you got any questions you want to send in, I will try and get them answered by Samsung.

Today we learned that Verizon will be launching two Android phones this year. Thanks to the Associated Press , we now know which phones may be coming soon. Images were posted with today’s press release which pictured the Google CEO and Verizon CEO holding new Android phones (Update: The AP has now taken down the photos). Eric Schmidt and Lowell McAdam show off new Android phones. Eric Schmidt was holding what is believed to be the HTC Desire and Lowell McAdam was holding the Motorola phone without a name. Engadget has an enhanced photo of the phone and we can clearly see it is the Motorola device everyone has been referring to as Sholes/Tao/Droid. The Motorola phone with a dozen names. We had expected to hear some official news on the Motorola Verizon phone this week, but nothing has been announced so far. That has not stopped the entire web from speculating when the device might launch. Gizmodo reports that Verizon will launch the Motorola phone before black Friday (November 27, 2009). BoyGeniusReport thinks the Motorola phone will come October 30, 2009. BGR is also reporting Sam’s Club will offer the Motorola phone this holiday season. This Motorola phone has been the most leaked Android phone that still has no official announcement. Motorola has been extra secretive about the device, but they keep saying over and over that a 2nd Android phone (1st is the Cliq) will be coming this year. Samsung, HTC, and AT&T could be announcing new Android phones this week, so maybe Motorola is holding out till the last possible moment before announcing the phone. Who knows, maybe we will just walk into Best Buy next month and find one sitting on the shelf.

Android devices operate almost exactly like computer and obviously runs independent of one. You don’t need to sync your Android with a cable to get your emails, contacts, calendar entries as it can be done through the air. The same goes with applications or podcasts. There are, however, some cases where you do need to connect a USB cable and mount your Android phone. The first example that comes to mind is copying music. Would it be nice to be able to access the SD card without having to use a USB cable? On Air lets you do that. A word of warning though, this application is for the few Apple Mac owners who also enjoy an Android phone. On Air works by using the AppleTalk protocol, though it could be used through WebDAV under Linux and Windows. I just haven’t tested that myself. On Air (available for free on the Market) is very simple to use. Open the app and click Power. The handset will display the IP address of your phone and a 4 digit password (randomy and new each time). You will then see a new computer on your network called “OnAirDisk”. Open it to access the “OnAirData”. You will then need to login with the username and the password displayed in the app. That’s it. You can now read and write on your SD-card. The speed will depend on your WiFi connection but I was able to play musics and videos directly from the SD-Card. Plenty fast enough for me, and I assume, most of you. On Air has been developed by Johan Cloetens , who also created PicMe and a new screen capture tool: ShootMe , both available from the Market and regularly updated.

“ UUUhhhhhhh, I am so sick of how slow my phone is! Kevin, if you can’t fix this I am selling this thing and buying an iPhone! ” These are the very words I heard come pouring into my office as a coworker, flushed with frustration, walked through the door. She not so gently placed a nice shiny MyTouch3G onto my desk as she entreated me, “I’ve had it, please fix this!” Stop. Rewind. I guess I should explain that I work in IT and a portion of what I do is to help those around me set up and utilize mobile devices that are friendly with our particular business. This ranges from Palms to Blackberries, iPhones, and even those dreaded Windows Mobile phones. Where I work, I have made a big push (a sales pitch some might say) to get more users onto Android and off the alternatives, but I digress. This isn’t the first time a newer user of Android has walked into my office red in the face and spat out the words, “It used to be really fast and now it takes forever, what’s wrong?” So, I pick up her phone, unlock it and scroll through her home screens. I spend a few minutes with it and hand it back to her. ”Should be fine now,” I say. She immediately begins playing with it and then looks up and says, “That’s amazing! What did you do?” At this point I make the mistake of launching into a pulpit speech about linux, memory, tasks, background services, intents, and so forth. Her eyes glaze over and she stops me short and says, “Well at any rate it’s working now, thanks.” To avoid your eyes glazing over, I am going to cut all the technical and semi-technical stuff and keep it simple. Below are some good tips and explanations on how to avoid a sluggish droid: Task killer . If you don’t have one, get one. Why? Android is capable (and sometimes over eager) to run applications in the background after you think you have closed them. In a lot of cases this is generally a good thing, but if you access multiple applications quickly and frequently these background processes stack up and begin consuming your Android’s memory. Most task killer applications come in a free version and are straight forward to use. Simply open the app, choose one or more processes to end and click the “kill” button and you’re done, free memory. Home screen overload. Don’t do it. Why? The more things you place onto your home screen the more memory your phone has to use to draw all the icons, picture frames, etc. every time you access the home screen (could be even worse when using home screen replacements, especially if you have more than 3 home screens) Hey, guess what’s next? Home screen replacements, be cautious, or at least stay on top of upgrading. Why? Home screen replacements aren’t bad per se; however, many of them do add in options such as new application trays and rotate features along with extra home screen panes that can slow you down. Also, if you are applying themes to them, the theme itself may not be optimized to draw icons quickly onto the home screen. You may also find that home screen replacements may not play well with certain applications and may cause you unnecessary and unwanted force closes. If you do install a home screen replacement, make sure you keep installing the updates. Read through the comments when downloading themes for home screen replacements to see if other users have experienced slowness or other problems. Widget-mania, don’t do it. Why? Again, this is one more thing your droid has to think about. Widgets are tied to processes that help refresh the widget and thus continually tax your phone’s memory. Now I’m not saying you can’t have widgets on your home screen, but just don’t cover all three sections in a sea of widgets. Some widgets have options to adjust the settings of how they operate. Explore each of your widgets to find out what you can modify in terms of refresh rates, etc. Animations and Orientation, they look cool, but turn them off. Why? Your phone needs to use processing power in order to do both. On top of everything else your droid is thinking about, it can cause slowness. My recommendation, if you don’t absolutely need it: turn it off. Caches and Histories “Hey Bro, I love you man”…That’s right, you know all those texts that you get from friends at 3 AM for whatever reason that have been stacking up over the last two months? Delete them. It’s a simple matter of house cleaning. If you simply must keep those embarrassing drunk texts or all the “ZOMGs did you see the shoes Amber wore with that dress!” texts, you can download SMS backup applications on the market that will save them to a web service. Excessive browser history and cache can also add to slowness, I recommend clearing it out on a regular basis. To do so, go into your browser > > menu > > settings > > clear cache > > clear history > > clear all cookie data. General Application overload If you haven’t figured it out by now, there is only so much memory to be passed around in Android. The more apps you have the more memory is being consumed. If you are getting down to only having around 10 mb left, there is a good chance your phone has slowed down quite a bit. To check the amount of memory currently available, from you home screen > > menu > > settings > > SD card and phone storage > > scroll down to internal phone storage > > check available space. If you are getting down to the wire, you have some options. Either decide if slowness is worth all your apps, or delete what you can live without. The other option would be to root your phone and start saving your apps on your SD card–or get an app that bypasses the necessity for root. Don’t get me wrong, you don’t necessarily have to follow all of these in order to keep your phone running fast. But, if you are experiencing slowness, you should maybe look to see if there is something on this list that you could be doing better on. This is simply a general list of things that I notice on new users’ phones that really brings them to a stand-still. (Especially when you are guilty of all of them at once!) I understand that everyone’s experience of their Android phone and what they use it for is different; however, the more you give your droid to think about at once, the less efficiently it thinks. If you remember this very general rule, you are most likely going to be able to trouble shoot or tweak things on your own to be back in tip-top shape in no time.
