Up until recently, developers using the Android Market had the ability to target distribution of their apps by specific countries. A recent email sent to developers indicates that they now have the freedom to select a particular wireless provider if they feel so inclined. First, we have added the ability to target applications by carrier in all countries. For example, if you are showing your app in the United States, you can now choose among Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless. If your apps are intended for users of specific carriers, please go to the Android Market developer website at http://market.android.com/publish (in the Publishing Options section under Locations) and target your applications to those carriers accordingly. The second half of the email advises developers that they might want to spend some time adjusting a little bit of code so their apps play nice with larger and smaller screens. New handsets like the HTC Tattoo will have smaller screens than the current stable of phones. On the flip side, devices like tablets are rolling out and apps won’t display properly if not addressed. If your app is written with the 1.5SDK (or lower) it will not show up in the Android Market on devices with these smaller screens. For more information on what the 1.6 SDK offers developers, head to the Android Developers Blog . Thanks for the email, Borys!

Update (16:10) : Found the official Sprint video for the Moment. Enjoy this while we wait for our HD video to upload. The Internet in the media center is slow. Update (16:00) : We got our hands on a special unit and shot some good HD footage. I got a complete walkthrough showing the case off and battery. The Moment features a 1440 mAh battery which should provide plenty of juice. Samsung has not provided a complete list of specs yet, but I was told we can have access to them later tonight. Stay tuned for more details. Update (12:30) : I was wandering around the Samsung booth area and bumped into Jack Seeley from Samsung. No one else knew anything about Android phones, but Mr. Seeley turned out to be an expert on the Moment. The 800 MHz CPU found in the moment is a Samsung S3C6410 . This is a Samsung built ARM11 processor. Unlike the Qualcomm MSM7K single chipset found in the other Android phones, Samsung has a separate ARM11 cpu and modem chipset. The Samsung Moment will feature 512 MB ROM and 256 MB RAM. (Same as Moto devices) The Moment will ship with Android 1.5. Update will be released by Samsung and available as a PC update. I was told to expect Android 1.6 for the Samsung Moment in 2010. This is disappointing for hardcore Android fans, but the casual user will care less. The Moment is a Sprint exclusive. Samsung said a Sprint exclusive such as this is not likely to ship in the UK, but could be available in Canada and Mexico. I would still expect a similar model sometime in the future for UK Android fans. Update (11:50) : Flickr gallery is up . More photos coming soon. We got some HD video recorded, but it might be hard to upload from the event. I asked about the 800 MHz cpu and they said it was a dedicated applications processor (not really saying much). Trying to get more info on the exact specs. Update (11:45) : Samsung employees are demoing the phone, but won’t let us hold it. I helped one of the Samsung girls navigate to the About Phone screen. The demo versions of the Moment are running Android 1.5. I will try to find out if Android 1.6 will be available at launch. Pics are coming up next. Update (11:30) : We just sat through the presentation of the Samsung Moment and got the release date and price. The Moment will be availalbe November 1, 2009 at Sprint stores and Best Buy. The phone will sell for $179.99 (after $50 instant savings and $100 mail in rebate). The Moment features basically the same software as what was available on Sprint’s other Android phone (HTC Hero). Sprint Navigator, Sprint TV, NFL Mobile Live, Nascar, and Visual Voicemail are all included. Customers can sign up for notification from Sprint at http://sprint.com/moment Update (9:30) : We are sitting at the CTIA keynote waiting for the special Samsung press event to start. We knew Samsung was unveiling a new mobile device and had speculated it was the InstinctQ phone for Sprint. It looks like our guess was right, because Samsung Mobile just sent out a press release which announced the Samsung Moment phone. Details are limited, but the specs that have been revealed include: 3.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen display 800MHz processor QWERTY keyboard that slides out horizontally 3.2 megapixel camera WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS This phone is Android powered and features a QWERTY keyboard so we expect this is the device everyone was calling the Samsung InstinctQ. A tipster told us the device is expected to launch on Sprint before Black Friday (November 27, 2009). We will be attending the press event and will update this post soon with pictures and videos of the device. I will try to get a complete specs list as well. If you got any questions you want to send in, I will try and get them answered by Samsung.

Android devices operate almost exactly like computer and obviously runs independent of one. You don’t need to sync your Android with a cable to get your emails, contacts, calendar entries as it can be done through the air. The same goes with applications or podcasts. There are, however, some cases where you do need to connect a USB cable and mount your Android phone. The first example that comes to mind is copying music. Would it be nice to be able to access the SD card without having to use a USB cable? On Air lets you do that. A word of warning though, this application is for the few Apple Mac owners who also enjoy an Android phone. On Air works by using the AppleTalk protocol, though it could be used through WebDAV under Linux and Windows. I just haven’t tested that myself. On Air (available for free on the Market) is very simple to use. Open the app and click Power. The handset will display the IP address of your phone and a 4 digit password (randomy and new each time). You will then see a new computer on your network called “OnAirDisk”. Open it to access the “OnAirData”. You will then need to login with the username and the password displayed in the app. That’s it. You can now read and write on your SD-card. The speed will depend on your WiFi connection but I was able to play musics and videos directly from the SD-Card. Plenty fast enough for me, and I assume, most of you. On Air has been developed by Johan Cloetens , who also created PicMe and a new screen capture tool: ShootMe , both available from the Market and regularly updated.

Augmented reality allows you to layer objects over a view of your surroundings whilst you look at them through the camera on your phone. This brings up many possibilities and MoVue uses this technique to look at your surroundings and display on your screen locations of different attractions and businesses such as shops, hotels, restaurants and lots of others. You start the app up and the camera is activated. You then aim your phone in a direction and the businesses are displayed as little blue dots with symbols to represent the type of business. The business name is shown and a small map in the corner of the screen shows you where it is located. The details of the businesses come from Yelp or Qype, and clicking the business brings up a small box that details the business name. Also in this box are: rating, address, the option to visit the ratings site, view on a map, or call them. The camera view can get a little busy if there are a lot of businesses around and it can be a bit fiddly to select the correct one. This is made easier by allowing you to click on the small map which brings up a larger map that shows the businesses around you and you can select them and view the details this way. This makes it a lot easier to see the information you need, although it doesn’t bring up all the details that the box on the camera view does such as direct call or go to the review site. The two sources of info, Yelp and Qype, are great places to go to find out peoples opinions of the businesses and add your own opinions. This is done by signing up on their sites and adding your opinion directly through their websites as there is no function to add reviews through the app (which would be a good addition.) You can select the categories you want the app to show and the radius it looks at. This would make it an ideal companion if you are in a strange place and want to find a nice place to eat or visit a local attraction. Overall this is a good app which uses the augmented reality technology well. The app has been entered into ADC2 and is available for free in the Android market.

A super secret document made its way into the hands of Taylor and company over at AndroidAndMe which outlines the plans for Motorola’s Tao handset. We’re being treated to some insider information that sheds light on what to expect from both Motorola and Verizon. This phone definitely plans to deliver the goods. Rumored to drop December 1st, the Tao is being billed as the world’s thinnest slide QWERTY phone at 13.7mm thick. Other details include a 3.7″ touch screen with 16:9 ratio, 16GB on board storage, Flash and a little something called Android 2.0 , whatever that is. There’s mention of a dock that transforms the phone into a beside clock, digital picture frame, or bedside clock. From the sounds of it, the Tao will come with it in the box. There are tons of little goodies in the document – Too many to list out here. If you’re into things that get Android fans excited, then might we suggest reading it for yourself ? If you’re looking for the full-on spec list, we have that for ya. Here’s what we have so far. You’ll note that some of it is a little conflicting. Specs: OMAP3430 – 600 MHz ARM Cortex A8 + PowerVR SGX 530 GPU + 430MHz C64x+ DSP + ISP (Image Signal Processor) Dimensions 60.00 x 115.80 x 13.70 mm Weight 169 g Battery Li-ion 1400 mAh. Standby 450 hours, talk time 420 minutes 3.7-inch touch-sensitive display with a resolution of 854×480 pixels, 16 million color depth. Physical screen size is 45.72 mm by 81.34 mm. 512MB/256MB ROM/RAM microSD / microSDHC expansion slot Camera: 5.0 megapixel with autofocus and video recorder Connectivity: USB2.0, 3.5mm audio jack, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, Wi-Fi Operating System: Android 2.0 (with Eclair, no Motoblur ) Package Contents: Phone Motorola Sholes, battery, charger, USB cable, 8GB MicroSD memory card and other literature The list we were passed does not indicate the dock, nor does it match up in terms of on board storage. Also noteworthy is that this is not going to have MOTOBLUR, the new interface developed by Motorola. This matches up with the pictures we’ve seen so far. Hang on folks, this is about to get really fun!

Sometimes I do a search on my desktop computer, only to find that I need to repeat the same search again later on my mobile phone. Today in the US we're launching Personalized Suggest for Android, iPhone and Palm WebOS, which makes it really easy to repeat your past searches on the go. For example, suppose that before I depart for the airport, I quickly check my flight status by searching for "american airlines 19" using google.com on my computer. Later, as I am hailing a taxi in rush hour traffic, I can open google.com on my phone, click in the search box, and choose "american airlines 19" from the list of search suggestions! To try this yourself, make sure that you are signed-in to the same Google Account on your computer and on your phone when searching. In addition, Web History needs to be enabled for your Google Account. Mobile users can turn on/off history by selecting "Save searches" or "Do not save searches" under Settings on google.com .
The mobile search team is always looking for new ways to make searching the world around you as easy and useful as searching the web. Today we're introducing a redesigned local search experience on your phone that integrates with Google Maps on your computer and includes browseable categories that let you search without typing. Let me tell you how I used these features on my recent vacation to Hawaii. Before I left, I researched places to visit on Google Maps. I signed in to my Google account and starred the places I wanted to go. Once I got to Hawaii, by signing in on my phone, I was able to see the places I starred on desktop Maps under "Starred Places". I could then click through on place names to visit mobile-optimized versions of Place Pages for Google Maps that include opening hours, reviews, photos, and more. The new category browse feature made it easy to find a place to rent bicycles for a quick tour of the coastline. I just tapped on "Entertainment & Recreation" and then "Bicycles" to execute a search — no typing necessary. When it was time for scuba diving, I didn't see an appropriate category, so I started typing "SCUBA" in the search box and clicked on a suggestion for "Scuba Tour Agency". A few hours later, I was petting a white-tipped reef shark! Of course, local search isn't only useful when you're traveling — here's an example of planning a birthday party in my hometown, San Francisco: To access these features on your mobile device, go to www.google.com/m/local , or just click on the Local tab on www.google.com . The product is available in the US and China, with more regions coming soon. Posted by Joshua Siegel, Product Manager, Mobile Local Search Team

TheStreet.com is reporting that Verizon will finally unveil the Motorola Tao (Sholes) next week. This coincides with the CTIA show in San Diego that we will be attending . Motorola had previously said they would be making an announcement in the coming weeks and is also holding their Motodev Summit in San Diego to coincide with CTIA. We reported this week in our rumor report that more developers units of the Tao/Sholes were rolling out and it appears this was true. Someone over at HowardForums got his hand on a sample unit and posted some pics. Another weird tip just came in related to Motorola. I was talking with one of our friends from Moto and he happened to mention that the Android 1.6 video we posted last week actually featured one of Moto’s phones. Pay special attention to the speed of the phone because the videos are in real time. You can also see a silver lining around the display which is not something found on either HTC phone that is currently available.

I loved the Palm OS, but the honeymoon faded quickly. Same story with Windows mobile. I had high hopes for the gargantuan in Redmond’s foray into the mobile world only to be disappointed. It wasn’t long before I was looking for something better. Android is a different story. We are about to celebrate our one year anniversary together and the thrill is still there just like when I opened the box and first saw that bright “G1” shine at me from the screen. One could debate the reasons for its strengths and argue about its weaknesses for some time but few will question that what is keeping Android relevant are the amazing developers. I’m referring to both those who provide us with these amazing apps as well as those at Google who continue to fine-tune an already amazing OS. This of course is an opinion piece and I am likely to change mine but for now, I know I have found the perfect mobile OS! Doesn’t it deserve the perfect phone? I think so. It’s almost silly to call what we carry around a ‘phone’ anymore. Sure, it makes and receives calls but that’s just a function of the device much like 98% of cars receive and play back music radio stations but we don’t call them radios! No, the perfect phone isn’t a phone but an information hub that provides us with directions, entertainment, information and sure, in a pinch, we can use it for calls. Cell phones went through an interesting phase in the late 90’s; they got smaller and smaller. This was hilariously lampooned in Zoolander. Remember the tiny phone the evil Mugatu held up to his ear ? The ultimate cool dude had the ultimate phone. Sometime after they shrank to these minuscule devices they did an about face and started growing again. Why the turnaround? It came out a desire for more functionality. Phones now had cameras and screens and the new bells and whistles added girth. While this was happening, our laptops were getting smaller. Components got smaller, need for portability grew and before we knew it we had the netbook craze. Cute little laptops that just about fit in your back pocket. The Android OS deserves an Information Hub (Info-Hub) worthy of its power. This Info-Hub will be the perfect combination of the smaller netbooks and larger cell phone. This is my vision of that “Big Bang” and the device that evolves from it. The Info-Hub Must Have… Slide-Out Keyboard I like the virtual keyboard for quick messages and searches but, the Info-Hub will need a real slide out keyboard. It’s a must. This is more than a phone; It’s a source of information. I need to be able to type out what I need to find or document quickly. Camera w/ Flash The Info-Hub must have a camera that transforms the swiss-army knife of information into a camera and camcorder that will work under any lighting conditions. 10 Gigs of storage space minimum Developers have given us some pretty amazing tools that allow us to put music, pics and videos on their servers giving us access to multiple gigs of space. The trade off is you have to login and often times wait for access to your stuff. Additionally, if you are driving and happen to hit a dead-spot, you are out of luck. Air travel is a lonely proposition as well. The Info-Hub will make it easy to store just about everything you want in an always-there area. Superb Speakers The Info-Hub can’t have those “tinny” sounding speakers that require silence to really hear the sound coming from the device like Info-Hub enthusiasts will demand. The sound on phones has been getting better and better, its time to go that extra mile on the Info-Hub. BIG screen Sure, I can watch a movie on the 3-inch screen I have now but not for long without having to rub my poor sore eyeballs. The Info-Hub will have to have at least 8 inches of glorious crystal clear screen. Now, this is clearly going to be the biggest challenge for whoever decides to take on the manufacturing task of building my Info-Hub, but I have some ideas. I envision a standard touch screen of no less than 4 inches diagonal. This will be the primary screen that we use the majority of the time, but when we need a little more acreage for our tasks (we want to see a movie, type a novel, etc) we slide-out the extra monitor from behind the Info-Hub. The monitor extensions will slide out of the right, left and top. The Info-Hub will sense the screen has been expanded and automatically scale across what is now a large 8 inch monitor! Projector The Info-hub is for collecting and then sharing information. The projector will display the screen image a wall or screen making presentations simple and convenient. Remote Control This is key. The Info-Hub must be able to sit on the corner of one room playing my streaming music out of its amazing sound system while I control the music or presentation from the other side. Of course, additional components, especially removable ones, are fraught with dangers. What if it’s lost? Where do I keep it when I’m done with it? This has all been thought through of course! The remote control will come with a GPS tracker and alarm that will beep when it’s a certain distance away from the main unit. That distance is set by you with a default of twenty feet. When you are done with the remote you simply slide it perfectly into the bottom of the Info-Hub. A place for everything and everything in its place! Stand Finally, the Info-Hub will need to be easily propped up in several different positions. It will need to sit on the dash of your car when you need it to be a GPS. It will rest on your night stand when you need it to be an alarm clock. When you are watching a movie you will need it to sit up in a way that the monitors slide out. The pull out stands that sit in the rear and pull out vertically and horizontally will serve this purpose. So, that’s it. The next generation of the “phone”. Now, its time to see which manufacturer is going to pick up the ball and run with it. Motorola? LG? HTC? Google ? Obviously this article was written with tongue firmly implanted in cheek. But, it is fun to consider the possibilities, right? Now its your turn. When you envision the “phone” of the future, what do you see? What are your must have components? Let’s build the Info-Hub together! First thing we probably need is a better name . Leave a comment with your ideas!

If your company makes printers but general trends are leaning toward using less paper and moving digital content to e-readers and smartphones, what can you do? Hewlett-Packard’s solution is to find new ways to get people to print more. The $399 H-P Photosmart Premium All-in-One with Touch-Smart Web ( hp.com/go/touchprinting ) will print, copy, fax and scan like other all-in-ones.
