On August 25th, 2009, 30 Android developers got together at the Fast Company offices to participate in the NYC Android Developers Meetup. The Meetup was organized by the team at Medialets . Medialets is an innovative company that provides a rich media advertising and analytics platform for mobile. Like quite a few others, this was my first Android meetup. I wasn’t sure what to expect. After introductions and some lively discussion about whether Donut would run on our G1s, we learned that there were 5 apps ready to be demonstrated. Of the 5 apps shown that night, 4 are in ADC2. The feedback provided and the opportunity to see other apps and discuss them was valuable for everyone. Will any of the NYC apps I saw that night make to to round 2 of ADC2? We’ll have to wait and see, but I think it’s possible. Let me get right to the apps: Balance the Beer Like it sounds, a fun game to use your phone as a tray and a balance a beer. Play with friends and the loser buys the next round. The best part? Since it was developed by the NYC Java User’s Group, they’ve made it open source. Get the source code . BFF Photo BFF Photo is a Facebook app for viewing your photos and friend photos. You can upload photos and videos from your phone to Facebook – no USB or computer required. This is an app that I developed. For the demo that night, I showed this video . The app has changed since then. A little more on that later. BubbleBeats BubbleBeats is a new and interesting way to make playlists on your phone. After learning about BubbleBeats at the meetup, I did a review for AndroidGuys . BubbleBeats was developed by Jason Van Anden. Jason is an artist and inventor whose work includes the robots Neal and Iona . Lucid Lucid is a wacky, dreamy game. Your goal is to navigate baby Hermin through the dreamscape world and get him through the night without waking him up. I’ve made it though level 9, but not 10. Team Lucid is comprised of NYU students who conceived the game as part of the first Annual Global Game Jam. PrimoSpot Parking The only app shown that night that is not in ADC2. PrimoSpot is a local app for Boston and NY (so far!). With parking so important in those cities, this app provides the often complex parking rules for a particular street right on your phone. It also includes garages and prices. The team made the decision to skip ADC2 since this was a local app. PrimoSpot Parking Swift Swift speaks for itself, it is the “The fastest, leanest, meanest Twitter app.” Swift is a fast and very polished Twitter app. Sebastian Delmont is the developer for Swift and I learned a few things from him that night. He talked about looking at the Android source code as the best way to learn and develop great apps. That is not always an easy path, but it is good advice. He talked about releasing code into the market to get feedback. I noticed that on the night of the meetup and for ADC2, that Swift was at version 0.4. Releasing a beta and calling it a beta may be a way to encourage constructive feedback. The quality of the apps at the meetup made me long for more time to improve BFF Photo for ADC2. Like many others, my app was created with ADC2 in mind. The deadline forces brutal decisions to be made about what features to include and when to stop everything and just submit the app. My app and most others have seen several updates since ADC2 and that’s a good thing. Can NYC be a creative and technical hub for Android development? Maybe. There are a lot of Java developers in NY and surrounding areas; there are a lot of talented people. The quality of the apps at the meetup and an interest group that included students, artists, and seasoned programmers tells me that there just might be some great apps coming from the Big Apple.

Here’s an easy way to do it.One of my favourite Android apps is Ringdroid, which lets me create ringtones by editing songs stored on my HTC Dream. Well, at least not on his phone.Anyone looking to create their own ringtones need only download the free application Audacity.
PicMe is a tool to capture the screen from your Android device, however it can only be used on rooted devices . It has been tested on Dream, Magic, Hero, Galaxy. To get a screenshot from your Android device, you can install the Android SDK , connect the phone via USB and use the Dalvik Debug Monitor (ddms). Or you can use Screenshot (only rooted devices), it will save the captured screen on your memory card (or sent it by email) but you will still need to transfer it to your computer. PicMe will get the screen capture directly to your computer, in your browser. You just need to point to the IP address of your Android device (displayed when you start PicMe), then you can save the graphic and refresh the page to get the next one… this is very easy and simple to use. According to the developer the “next version will embed a VNC server and expose VNC applet to support more dynamic views”, very promising!

This post could be rather short because as of today (23rd of September 2009) none of the 4 main mobile phone operators doing business in Ireland have an Android device on offer… not one! You can get the latest Nokia N97, the iPhone 3GS, any flavors of BlackBerry even a couple of Windows Mobile devices but no Android. We have a problem…! The problem is that the only way to use an Android device is to buy it unlocked from abroad, once fitted with a Sim-card and configured with the correct APN settings, they are working just fine. However, that means you can’t get it subsidised. You have to pay the full price for a new or try to grab one second hand. While some (like me!) will prefer (and can afford) to have an unlocked handset, lots of people will not have the funds to buy new mobile phone this way and have to rely on the subsidised from their mobile phone operator. The second issue is with the Android Market. From Ireland you can only see and install the free applications and none of the paid apps. I would assume that it is so because “officially” there are no-one using an Android phone in Ireland. I am only speculating here by the way as there are no indications anywhere of how it is decided, if anyone knows, feel free to add a comment. There are few other issues, like getting support for your unlocked device. Even if this is a problem with the network, the mobile phone operator will quickly blame the unsupported device. It is also difficult for mobile devices developers based in Ireland, they can’t be motivated to develop for a platform that virtually no-one is using at home, nonetheless few ( http://www.mercurygirlinc.com or http://business.loudervoice.com/android-reviews/ ) are trying, fair-play to them! Why?!? I’ve tried to figure out why Ireland is so far behind… and it does not make sense. We have a strong Google presence in Ireland (EU Headquarters) and a good part of the employees (nearly 2000 it seems), if not all of them, got a G1 (lucky they are!). I am not sure if Google Ireland has an agreement with an operator or if each employee is free to use whomever they wanted though… If someone knows, please share with a comment. There are few Irish companies developing Android applications and they need support, in other words they should be able to sell locally their applications. The technology used for the networks is the same as in many other countries (GSM, UTMS, HSDPA, EDGE,…), nothing fancy or old. Proof is that my HTC Hero is working just fine. While this is a small country, there are plenty of subscribers ( 4,809,857 in June 2009 ). If the iPhone managed to be successful with just one operator (O2) and very unattractive contracts (minimum is 45 euro per month for only 1 GB!). I am sure any Android devices from HTC, Samsung or Motorola will do just great! Also you can get Android devices on smaller markets (Malta for example, roughly 10 times smaller than Ireland). The cherry on top… 3 of the 4 operators are large groups operating in other countries: Vodafone, O2 and Three. In these countries, they are “offering” Android devices (see Table below)! One of the excuses they will give when asked about introducing new devices, is that they have not been approved for the network… How come an HTC Magic that is working in 12 countries for Vodafone (a member of the open handset alliance by the way!), can not be introduced TODAY on the Irish market… No technical issues, no language issues (already available in English in UK)… So why?! If anyone from Vodafone (or any other operator) can answer, please feel free! While doing some research for this post I found this article from one year ago… “Asked last week if Vodafone would be considering launching with its own version of the HTC Dream, Vodafone Ireland’s chief executive, Charles Butterworth said: “The answer is yes, over time. I’m sure we will, but without getting into the specifics of which market and how.”” , so I guess they got the specifics wrong for Ireland! Also it seems that even the new HTC Tattoo will be launched in October on Vodafone UK , nothing about it on Vodafone Ireland . I hope that the situation will change soon so that I will be able, like many other users, access all the apps in the market and reward developers by buying the labour of their work. I also hope that soon many Android devices will be available for a moderate cost for anyone to buy as they are simply great devices loaded with an exciting platform. From what I have read on different blogs and forums, Ireland is not alone in the Android devices desert… please share your feeling if you have the same issues in your country.

I need to start this article with a confession of addiction, it is what they tell me helps to handle my problem; Hello, my name is Ray and I am addicted to Technology. That being out of the way; I am like Napoleon Dynamite’s brother Kip, singing, “I love technology” at the end of the movie. Being an addict as such, the iPhone was something that sent my arm itching need for tech gadgets over the top. I saw the iPhone and fell instantly in love, and immediately went about looking for ways to get one, and was stymied when I found out that AT$T (the cash sign there is not a typo) had exclusive rights to the phone, and wanted my first born child or my star wars collection in exchange to get my hands on that beautiful piece of hardware. Like any good junkie, I started looking for alternatives to get my fix, and that is when I found my G1 from T-Mobile. I could not believe my eyes when I saw the description, a phone which runs off a Google platform, ties into all things Google, AND has a STRONG similarity to the device of my desire, the ability to touch the electronic awesomeness and interact with STUFF without the use of silly stylus. I remember getting that beautiful box from the t-mobile store, unpacking my G1, pressing the power button and while I was waiting for it to boot up, dreaming of all the awesome applications I was going to use and download, and all the different ways I was going to make it the best iPhone alternative EVER. The phone powered up and I started playing, and I found myself……disappointed. Only 3 Home screens? No widgets, no auto rotate? (This was pre-cupcake of course). I felt ripped off, I felt robbed. I started scanning the Market and found it a POOR substitute for the app store that I had been so looking forward to. I then panicked and realized that I was stuck with this poor excuse for a tech gadget for 2 years!! I begged my wife to take it as hers, so I could get an unlocked iPhone. She being a gadget widow for 10 years now, and tired of moving boxes of different tech toys that I have used and forgotten put her foot down and forbade me to even THINK of getting rid of the phone. I resigned myself to being stuck, and began working with the phone, trying to force an iPhone experience out of it. As I started getting deeper into the G1, something funny started to happen, I started to feel like this phone was well, made for me and what I do. I use G-mail exclusively, our organization has our domain connected to Google Apps, and so this is part of my everyday life. When the G1 connected to my gmail account, I had connectivity, just like that. “It just worked”. Sounds very Apple doesn’t it? I started exploring the calendar program on the phone, and saw that it had ALREADY downloaded my calendar from our Google Apps account. After that, it was love at second sight, it had me at the proverbial, “hello”, since for me one of the Holy Grails of smartphones is how easy it is to sync your calendar dates with your mobile device. If you have ever struggled with any of the Windows Mobile iterations, you have felt my pain when trying to get your calendar dates on your phone. This thing, this beautiful G1, had done it like some sort of ghost of Radar O’Reilly from MASH. Without me even KNOWING or TELLING it to. It just, did it. I was in LOVE. Being a year or so down the road of G1 ownership, and having fallen in love with Android, I have heard the many critics of the platform talking that it is no iPhone replacement. And hey, they are right! The Android platform in my opinion was not created to replace the iPhone, but to COMPETE with it, which it does in my opinion quite well. In the past year, we have seen significant add-on’s to the G1 and Android platform phones, we had the release of Cupcake, we have seen Google Voice launch, and we have seen the Market mature somewhat in its offerings. Many critics are saying that the Android platform really does not deserve to be out there, nor does it have the muscle to compete with Apple and it’s device. My argument there is that Google, I do not think, is trying to replace anything, but to match the needs of many of it’s users, and specifically business oriented consumers. After getting my G1, a coworker of mine got one as well. The collaboration that the phone unlocks for us really does not have an equal that we have found. We can chat through Google talk, with one person on a desktop and the other on their phone. We can share calendars and dates. We can access our organizations documents through Google Docs, and we can even locate each other using Google Maps and latitude. The device has linked us in a way that having an office full of iPhone’s might not be able to do as easily. Android is built to be a COLLABORATIVE platform, where I think that the iPhone is built to be a COMMERCIAL platform. Android, not ready for Prime Time? Perhaps not the Prime Time that we are assuming when comparing it to the iPhone, but it is MORE than ready for the Prime Time that matters – making life and business work better, and taking advantage of the internet and “cloud” computing, removing the need to be in one place to access your data. That makes Android a true player in this new smart phone world that has been defined by the iPhone. Android, like Google, is looking to redefine how we handle data, is doing a great job at it. Call me an Android Fanboy, I am guilty as charged.

Android 1.6 features a multi-lingual speech synthesis engine called Pico. It allows any Android application to “speak” a string of text with an accent that matches the language. The engine supports the following languages: English (American and British accents), French, Italian, German and Spanish.
