Gartner’s about page says that “Gartner, Inc. is the world’s leading information technology research and advisory company. We deliver the technology-related insights necessary for our clients to make the right decisions, every day.” Based on recent projections by Gartner VP and Distinguished Analyst Ken Dulaney the right decision for mobile platforms in the future is Android. His report projects Android with a 14.5% market share by 2012. That would see Android overtaking iPhone and second only to Symbian. His full projected breakdown: Symbian – 39% (203 million devices shipped) Android – 14.5% (76 million devices shipped) iPhone – 13.7% (71.5 million devices shipped) Windows Mobile – 12.8% (66.8 million devices shipped) BlackBerry OS – 12.5% (65.25 million devices shipped) Various Linux devices – 5.4% (28 million devices shipped) Palm webOS – 2.1% (11 million devices shipped) Of course guessing future projections on anything is a less than scientific process. When you consider how relatively young and volatile the mobile OS market for smart phones is it makes any hypothesis about the future all the more questionable. But it’s clear that expectations are high for Android!

All the excitement around today’s news of a Barnes & Noble eReader running Android may end up being for naught. According to IREX Technologies , their new DR800SG series eReader is going to be the device that Barnes & Noble uses for their Kindle-killer. This soon-to-be released unit packs an 8.1-inch, touch-screen and multi-mode 3G capabilities powered by Verizon Wireless. The Barnes & Noble eBook strategy is very much aligned with IREX’s approach to the market. IREX’s open platform , powered by Barnes & Noble’s comprehensive eBookstore, is an appealing proposition for people who love to read. Barnes & Noble is the world’s largest bookseller, so we understand how to create a great shopping experience for people looking for simple and convenient access to their favorite subjects, authors and material. – William J. Lynch, president of BN.com Unfortunately, the open platform used for the device doesn’t appear to be Android. As pointed out by Jaap A. Haitsma, the eReader uses GNOME as the OS. You can write programs for these devices by installing the SDK . I’ve tried it a while ago and it works pretty nicely. I only find it a pity that IREX doesn’t advertise this at all at their main website . We did some digging around the IREX site for Android only to come up completely empty-handed. This is not to say definitively that this is the same device the WSJ is talking about. In fact, that’s where it gets muddy. The Journal says that the screen size is 6 inches and that the carrier will be AT&T. Awfully conflicting stuff if it’s the same product. Our own Jose Salviati did a bit of sleuthing today and here’s what he found out Excited about the possibility of an Android based eReader from Barnes and Noble I reached out to the bookstore giant from New York. Why not go to the source, right? Unfortunately, the response from B&N was very politically-correct; no admissions, no denials. “Barnes & Noble has made no announcement about a device.” Mary Ellen Keating Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications & Public Affairs for Barnes and Noble told me. “Barnes & Noble believes that readers should have access to the books in their digital library from any device, anywhere, at anytime.” What better platform for the “anywhere, anytime” device than Android, right Mary Ellen? . With Kindle sales projected to be 1 billion in 2010 it makes sense that Barnes and Noble is at least looking at devices to get a piece of the eReader pie. Android as the platform of choice for this mystery device also makes sense. For now though the official word is mum. More to come, I’m sure. The plot thickens! The truth is out there, somewhere! Mary Ellen Keating mentioned the IREX device to me when we communicated earlier. Now, it’s always dangerous to read intent into an email but her reply only listed the IREX device along side others they intent to support. Keating did not single it out as the one they would put their name on. We are supporting many devices i.e. Plastic Logic’s forthcoming device, Irex’s new device, iphone and ipod touch, blackberry, and PCs. This is where we throw it back to you… do you think these are the same devices ? Is Android going to be part of the picture? Thanks for the tip Carl!
Here are some stream-of-consciousness thoughts on the Archos 5 Internet Tablet that arrived today at CommonsWare ’s secret mountain lair. Pros: It looks slick. The 800MHz CPU makes this device rather snappy for many operations. Flipping between settings activities and launching the Browser app, for example, are lightning-quick. The screen, visually, is very nice. This is a great size for Web browsing, for example. Cons: Touchscreen is inaccurate, even after two calibration rounds. It does not register touches all of the time, which makes scrolling through lists a serious chore. For example, when reviewing the installed applications, I wound up accidentally clicking on applications several times when I was simply trying to get it to scroll the list. The hacked status bar, offering soft keys for back, menu, and home instead of physical keys, is a bit clumsy to me, though it may be just because I am not used to it. The Amazon listing for this product claims it comes with a bunch of apps pre-installed. It does not. It comes with Twidroid and ThinkFree Office (the latter installed in firmware), and that’s it for third-party apps. As expected, it does not come with any of the Google apps for Android, as this product was (apparently) made using the Android open source project alone. However, confusingly, it does not seem to come with any sort of client for their own app market. Hence, other than by browsing to Web sites to download APKs, getting apps on this device will be a serious chore. And, since there does not appear to be a camera, Barcode Scanner and kin are out. A user’s first step would need to be to install an independent market client (AndAppStore, SlideME, etc.). Translations to English are rough in spots. Yet another incompatible USB cable. My guess is that mini-USB was too thick for this device, but it is annoying to have another cable to keep track of. FWIW, I obtained this device for experimenting with WVGA Android applications, to help advise developers on how to deal with larger screen sizes. I am not necessarily intending on using this device as an ordinary consumer would.

You may have heard that one of the key changes introduced in Android 1.6 is support for new screen sizes. This is one of the things that has me very excited about Android 1.6 since it means Android will start becoming available on so many more devices. However, as a developer, I know this also means a bit of additional work. That's why we've spent quite a bit of time making it as easy as possible for you to update your apps to work on these new screen sizes. To date, all Android devices (such as the T-Mobile G1 and Samsung I7500, among others) have had HVGA (320x480) screens. The essential change in Android 1.6 is that we've expanded support to include three different classes of screen sizes: small: devices with a screen size smaller than the T-Mobile G1 or Samsung I7500, for example the recently announced HTC Tattoo normal: devices with a screen size roughly the same as the G1 or I7500. large: devices with a screen size larger than the G1 or I7500 (such as a tablet-style device.) Any given device will fall into one of those three groups. As a developer, you can control if and how your app appears to devices in each group by using a few tools we've introduced in the Android framework APIs and SDK. The documentation at the developer site describes each of these tools in detail, but here they are in a nutshell: new attributes in AndroidManifest for an application to specify what kind of screens it supports, framework-level support for using image drawables/layouts correctly regardless of screen size, a compatibility mode for existing applications, providing a pseudo-HVGA environment, and descriptions of compatible device resolutions and minimum diagonal sizes. The documentation also provides a quick checklist and testing tips for developers to ensure their apps will run correctly on devices of any screen size. Once you've upgraded your app using Android 1.6 SDK, you'll need to make sure your app is only available to users whose phones can properly run it. To help you with that, we've also added some new tools to Android Market. Until the next time you upload a new version of your app to Android Market, we will assume that it works for normal-class screen sizes. This means users with normal-class and large-class screens will have access to these apps. Devices with "large" screens simply run these apps in a compatibility mode, which simulates an HVGA environment on the larger screen. Devices with small-class screens, however, will only be shown apps which explicitly declare (via the AndroidManifest) that they will run properly on small screens. In our studies, we found that "squeezing" an app designed for a larger screen onto a smaller screen often produces a bad result. To prevent users with small screens from getting a bad impression of your app (and reviewing it negatively!), Android Market makes sure that they can't see it until you upload a new version that declares itself compatible. We expect small-class screens, as well as devices with additional resolutions in Table 1 in the developer document to hit the market in time for the holiday season. Note that not all devices will be upgraded to Android 1.6 at the same time. There will be significant number of users still with Android 1.5 devices. To use the same apk to target Android 1.5 devices and Android 1.6 devices, build your apps using Android 1.5 SDK and test your apps on both Android 1.5 and 1.6 system images to make sure they continue to work well on both types of devices. If you want to target small-class devices like HTC Tattoo, please build your app using the Android 1.6 SDK. Note that if your application requires Android 1.6 features, but does not support a screen class, you need to set the appropriate attributes to false. To use optimized assets for normal-class, high density devices like WVGA, or for low density devices please use the Android 1.6 SDK.

On August 25th, 2009, 30 Android developers got together at the Fast Company offices to participate in the NYC Android Developers Meetup. The Meetup was organized by the team at Medialets . Medialets is an innovative company that provides a rich media advertising and analytics platform for mobile. Like quite a few others, this was my first Android meetup. I wasn’t sure what to expect. After introductions and some lively discussion about whether Donut would run on our G1s, we learned that there were 5 apps ready to be demonstrated. Of the 5 apps shown that night, 4 are in ADC2. The feedback provided and the opportunity to see other apps and discuss them was valuable for everyone. Will any of the NYC apps I saw that night make to to round 2 of ADC2? We’ll have to wait and see, but I think it’s possible. Let me get right to the apps: Balance the Beer Like it sounds, a fun game to use your phone as a tray and a balance a beer. Play with friends and the loser buys the next round. The best part? Since it was developed by the NYC Java User’s Group, they’ve made it open source. Get the source code . BFF Photo BFF Photo is a Facebook app for viewing your photos and friend photos. You can upload photos and videos from your phone to Facebook – no USB or computer required. This is an app that I developed. For the demo that night, I showed this video . The app has changed since then. A little more on that later. BubbleBeats BubbleBeats is a new and interesting way to make playlists on your phone. After learning about BubbleBeats at the meetup, I did a review for AndroidGuys . BubbleBeats was developed by Jason Van Anden. Jason is an artist and inventor whose work includes the robots Neal and Iona . Lucid Lucid is a wacky, dreamy game. Your goal is to navigate baby Hermin through the dreamscape world and get him through the night without waking him up. I’ve made it though level 9, but not 10. Team Lucid is comprised of NYU students who conceived the game as part of the first Annual Global Game Jam. PrimoSpot Parking The only app shown that night that is not in ADC2. PrimoSpot is a local app for Boston and NY (so far!). With parking so important in those cities, this app provides the often complex parking rules for a particular street right on your phone. It also includes garages and prices. The team made the decision to skip ADC2 since this was a local app. PrimoSpot Parking Swift Swift speaks for itself, it is the “The fastest, leanest, meanest Twitter app.” Swift is a fast and very polished Twitter app. Sebastian Delmont is the developer for Swift and I learned a few things from him that night. He talked about looking at the Android source code as the best way to learn and develop great apps. That is not always an easy path, but it is good advice. He talked about releasing code into the market to get feedback. I noticed that on the night of the meetup and for ADC2, that Swift was at version 0.4. Releasing a beta and calling it a beta may be a way to encourage constructive feedback. The quality of the apps at the meetup made me long for more time to improve BFF Photo for ADC2. Like many others, my app was created with ADC2 in mind. The deadline forces brutal decisions to be made about what features to include and when to stop everything and just submit the app. My app and most others have seen several updates since ADC2 and that’s a good thing. Can NYC be a creative and technical hub for Android development? Maybe. There are a lot of Java developers in NY and surrounding areas; there are a lot of talented people. The quality of the apps at the meetup and an interest group that included students, artists, and seasoned programmers tells me that there just might be some great apps coming from the Big Apple.

There’s plenty of news this week about new BlackBerry devices, but to kick things off I want to highlight a story that seemed small at first, but grew as word spread throughout the week. T-Mobile has agreed to carry BlackBerry Mobile Voice Systems , a two-year-old platform that allows companies to reroute desk calls to a user’s BlackBerry. This ties in with T-Mobile’s @ Home service , which allows customers to make unlimited calls over a Wi-Fi network, without using any plan minutes. Combined,

At first look, this dash mount was not what I was expected it would be. It didn’t appear to be the “Sturdy Swivel Mount” I was led to believe it was. It just seemed too simple and not very, well, sturdy. Nonetheless I decided to put it to the test. I have always been a fan of mounting my devices to my dash, but this was the first time I would mount my phone on my window. I have a Garmin GPS with a window mount but I have found that if you don’t “remount” (lick the suction cup every so often and stick it back on the window) it falls off in warm weather. That is not the case with the iGrip Bold Custom Fit Sturdy Swivel Mount . Much to my delight, I mounted it once and it has stayed in the same place ever since. The best part of mount is it bracket system. The sides of the mount brackets slide in and out depending on the size of your device. There’s padding on each so the device doesn’t damaged or scratched. Another great thing is they are adjustable up and down so you don’t have to worry about hitting camera or volume buttons on the side. You’ll find “feet” on the bottom of the bracket that your device rests upon. These are also padded and move so you can access the charging port while mounted. The entire unit swivels up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right. All that is missing is B, A. Sorry, couldn’t resist… This versatility and positioning makes it perfect for reading RSS feeds on the go, checking a quick message or even listening to a podcast. Tilt it horizontal and have TeleNav or your favorite GPS app running just like a standalone unit. All in all, I was very surprised by this mount. There’s a lot more to it than you would expect. I enjoy having it in my car and I’m sure you would as well. You can grab one of these for $29.95 out of the AndroidGuys store .
