This week marks the anniversary of Star Trek's original pilot episode "The Cage", and with it, the first appearance of the iconic Communicator. As one of the inspirations for today's mobile devices, the Communicator did more than just long-range voice calls; in fact, many of its locator and universal translation services still outpace today's state of the art. What's more, the Communicator was so critical to the daily workings of Starfleet that cadets' 4-year curriculum included mandatory courses in communications engineering. Today's brand of mobile user doesn't need four years to figure out their phone. But this week, and with a tip of the hat to the USS Enterprise for the Communicator's anniversary, we did want to celebrate all things mobile by sharing some of Google's favorite mobile tips and tricks. All week long, we're going to be tweeting and blogging our top tips for using Google Search, Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube, and more on your phone. We want to help every cadet go mobile, and get more out of their existing phone. Cadets with questions can ask them here until 11:59 PM Pacific Time, Tuesday night. Keep an eye on the Google Mobile Blog for answers to some of your questions on Wednesday, and tips for advertisers and developers later in the week. Everyone can boldly go... mobile!
The first images of Samsung’s on-screen keyboard have made their way online thanks to Android.hdblog.it . As you can see, there is just only so much you can do to customize the QWERTY keyboard. What Samsung has done is give the end user more options for entry. The pictures show landscape and portrait keyboards and the ability to choose between various alphanumeric, symbols and T9. Are there any prospective Galaxy (Lite) buyers out there excited by the keyboard options? Anyone who can pound out messages quicker with T9?
Ask yourself these questions … Despite your enthusiasm for the the little green robot, do only your closest friends know you own an Android device? Do you worry that most tech-indifferent people STILL don’t know what Android is? Do you feel left out when the water-cooler talk turns to the latest iPhone OS release? If you answered yes to any of these questions, chances are you are a victim of InvisiDroid Syndrome. Now, before you begin running for the triple-antibiotic cream, realize that your suffering MIGHT only be temporary. Granted, you didn’t really do anything to contract this pain and suffering … but some others are not so innocent. Smartphone carriers and manufacturers haven’t really promoted the Android OS as the “special sauce” that powers their amazing new phones. You would be hard pressed to recall ANY television spot that even mentions the word Android in connection with the Hero, G1, MyTouch3G, etc. And, who could compete with those clever “there’s an app for that” iPhone commercials that Apple keeps running (aside from the latest “there’s a map for that”)? Well, the Android community can … and here’s how. For the corporate members of the Android community, a few ideas that should increase Android awareness, as well as their profits: 1) The Freebie – What does Apple (widely recognized as the style king of pop-culture promotion) include with every Mac/iPod/etc.? An innocently placed free sticker. No instructions on what to do with it, or restrictions upon its use. Just an attractive, sturdy sticker that tells the world, “Hey, I’m an Apple fan!” Cellular carriers could similarly hand out their own themed freebie that sports the dapper green dude, as well. 2) The Common Ground – How many thousands of times have you been confronted with the phrase, “Intel Inside”? From television ads, to magazines, computer boxes, and, even computer cases, the pc manufacturers of the world rallied behind that common badge of quality. Android manufacturers (as well as OHA members) need to do the same. 3) The Mention – Android manufacturers and cellular carriers need to employ a basic memorization technique that emphasizes repetition. A simple mention of the “A” word in promotional materials from these disparate members of the Android community would benefit ALL members. Now is not the time to be neo-proprietary. And, for the common folk (with an uncommon interest in the Android world) … 1) Wear Your Support on Your Sleeve – Whether AndroidGuys.com, or another one of the fine Android sites, support them by purchasing one of their branded shirts to wear proudly whilst negotiating your daily routine. And if you are a shirt designer, consider using a stock Android robot somewhere in your design, or, at least, include your domain name for the casually curious. Additonally, for crying out loud, Google … start selling Android shirts along with the shirts of all of your other corporate identities. It all starts conversations and raises awareness. 2) The Not-so Freebie – Consider purchasing an Android logo sticker for the back of your phone. Or, the back of your laptop. Or, the back of your pet’s sweater. Just show the love. 3) Use Your ‘bot to it’s Fullest – Nothing breeds desire like watching a friend or co-worker doing something cool on their Android phone. Maybe Google or HTC will never pony up the cheddar for prime-time television spots like Apple does for the iPhone. Maybe carriers will continue assuming that people wouldn’t care about the OS in the only digital device they always carry with them … But, we don’t have to wait for some corporate monolith to promote the most exciting mobile platform ever. We, the energized Android consumers, can stop the InvisiDroid plague by planting the seeds of awareness, one sticker or shirt at a time. Go green!
Up until recently, developers using the Android Market had the ability to target distribution of their apps by specific countries. A recent email sent to developers indicates that they now have the freedom to select a particular wireless provider if they feel so inclined. First, we have added the ability to target applications by carrier in all countries. For example, if you are showing your app in the United States, you can now choose among Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless. If your apps are intended for users of specific carriers, please go to the Android Market developer website at http://market.android.com/publish (in the Publishing Options section under Locations) and target your applications to those carriers accordingly. The second half of the email advises developers that they might want to spend some time adjusting a little bit of code so their apps play nice with larger and smaller screens. New handsets like the HTC Tattoo will have smaller screens than the current stable of phones. On the flip side, devices like tablets are rolling out and apps won’t display properly if not addressed. If your app is written with the 1.5SDK (or lower) it will not show up in the Android Market on devices with these smaller screens. For more information on what the 1.6 SDK offers developers, head to the Android Developers Blog . Thanks for the email, Borys!

If you’re anything like me, getting out of bed is one of the hardest parts of the day. You deliberately set your alarm to go off at least 30 minutes earlier than when you really need to get up, just so you can hit snooze several times before dragging yourself out of bed in a semi-conscious haze. Alarmed aims to fix this type of behavior by providing simple, yet mentally stimulating, questions to help wake you up. Unlike a conventional alarm clock, Alarmed requires the user to solve a series of math and word scramble (anagram) questions in order to disable the alarm. If you cannot answer the question, you can select “Pass” and the alarm will move on to the next question while adding another to the bottom of the queue. Although you can adjust the amount and difficulty of the questions, they are designed to be just hard enough to get your “mental gears” turning. In theory, by the time you have correctly answered all of the questions you are fully awake and ready to get out of bed. The only weak point I can find in this app is that you can hit “Snooze” as often as you like, thus perpetuating the very problem it seeks to remedy. It would probably be more practical if it required you to solve equations before you can hit “Snooze,” as opposed to disabling the alarm. Having used this application, I can personally attest that Alarmed helps decrease, if not remove, morning haziness. Alarmed is very much like mental breakfast – and we all know breakfast is the most important meal of the day! Alarmed is available on the Android Market for free with a paid version (£1.00 or $1.59) which allows multiple alarms to be set as well as the option to play songs from your music library.

One of the more well-known features of Android 1.6 (Donut) is the improved Android Market. One of the enhancements to the content portal is the ability to sort apps by titles consideredt be “Just In”. This is designed to bring up only the most recent apps available to users. Unfortunately, it’s entirely too easy to game the system. All that is needed to qualify for the new filter is an update to your app. Most companies tend to update their applications with new features or added content. Others, will put out out minor, almost unnoticeable changes to the app in order to reap the benefits. An example of this would be language additions. Add German today and get listed as “just in”. Add Dutch tomorrow and you’re right back in the mix. Repeat as desired. One such company who may or may not be deliberately working the system is M STAR LLC. With a large percentage of their apps being paid, a move like this would not surprise us. Looking through their list, one gets the sense that all these calculators could be merged together as one and sold. We also noticed that many of the apps all have the same, or very similar, release number. Are they going down the list and updating each app with the minor stuff just to keep the paid apps on the fresh list? We’ll let you decide that. How does Google slow this down or discourage it this ? Do they need to?

HTC, Samsung, Motorola, LG, the list is growing. Manufacturers are opening their eyes to something you and I embraced long ago, Android is the NOW mobile platform. I’m excited to see the hardware that evolves around the best mobile platform. Heck, I even wrote an article about what the future might hold . I am more excited to know that whatever it is that these manufacturers whip up is going to be available to you, me, and everyone else. Allow me to explain. “ Shaq Vs. ” was a summer TV show in which Shaquille O’Neal took on other professional athletes in their respective sports! For instance, he played football against Ben Roethlisberger and beach volleyball against Misty May and Keri Walsh. Throughout the show, much like in MTV Cribs, we caught a glimpse of Shaq’s life and toys. Now, this will come as no surprise but he drives a custom built and very expensive car. My house would fit in his wife’s closet. He gets to places in a jet. I, on the other hand, drive to work and barely fit in my OWN closet. It didn’t bother me to see the lavishness of the Shaq lifestyle, instead it got me to thinking. He has a nicer car, nicer house, nicer jet (mine was built by my nine year old from a Lego set and its AMAZING but still a distant second to Shaq’s), nicer clothes, etc after painful etc; until, it hit me. Shaq can’t possibly have a more feature-rich phone than mine! HTC doesn’t have a “luxury line” that caters to the obscenely wealthy like Toyota does with Lexus. Sure, some luxury divisions exist but they are learning, especially in this economy , that its the features less so than the phone! Bill Gates phone doesn’t have a Star Trek like transporter option or a ray-gun attachment. (Now, THERE is a swiss-army phone ). Tiger Woods cell phone doesn’t automatically activate a GPS tracking device and magically return to him during those frustrating times when he is on one end of his yacht and he left his phone a mile away on the other end of his yacht. (I hate when that happens). None of them are carrying around an Info-Hub . No, Shaq, Bill, Tiger and the like are carrying around Blackberries, iPhones, G1’s and MyTouch’s. They drop calls, scratch screens and misplace their phones. Sure, Bill might have the latest and greatest version of the Windows Mobile OS (”latest and greatest Windows Mobile OS” is a great oxymoron, by the way) and the others might seriously pimp out their phones. But under the self applied gold encrusted lining and diamond appointments it’s just a phone – the same phone in most cases – as yours and mine. The great equalizer!

Gartner’s about page says that “Gartner, Inc. is the world’s leading information technology research and advisory company. We deliver the technology-related insights necessary for our clients to make the right decisions, every day.” Based on recent projections by Gartner VP and Distinguished Analyst Ken Dulaney the right decision for mobile platforms in the future is Android. His report projects Android with a 14.5% market share by 2012. That would see Android overtaking iPhone and second only to Symbian. His full projected breakdown: Symbian – 39% (203 million devices shipped) Android – 14.5% (76 million devices shipped) iPhone – 13.7% (71.5 million devices shipped) Windows Mobile – 12.8% (66.8 million devices shipped) BlackBerry OS – 12.5% (65.25 million devices shipped) Various Linux devices – 5.4% (28 million devices shipped) Palm webOS – 2.1% (11 million devices shipped) Of course guessing future projections on anything is a less than scientific process. When you consider how relatively young and volatile the mobile OS market for smart phones is it makes any hypothesis about the future all the more questionable. But it’s clear that expectations are high for Android!

All the excitement around today’s news of a Barnes & Noble eReader running Android may end up being for naught. According to IREX Technologies , their new DR800SG series eReader is going to be the device that Barnes & Noble uses for their Kindle-killer. This soon-to-be released unit packs an 8.1-inch, touch-screen and multi-mode 3G capabilities powered by Verizon Wireless. The Barnes & Noble eBook strategy is very much aligned with IREX’s approach to the market. IREX’s open platform , powered by Barnes & Noble’s comprehensive eBookstore, is an appealing proposition for people who love to read. Barnes & Noble is the world’s largest bookseller, so we understand how to create a great shopping experience for people looking for simple and convenient access to their favorite subjects, authors and material. – William J. Lynch, president of BN.com Unfortunately, the open platform used for the device doesn’t appear to be Android. As pointed out by Jaap A. Haitsma, the eReader uses GNOME as the OS. You can write programs for these devices by installing the SDK . I’ve tried it a while ago and it works pretty nicely. I only find it a pity that IREX doesn’t advertise this at all at their main website . We did some digging around the IREX site for Android only to come up completely empty-handed. This is not to say definitively that this is the same device the WSJ is talking about. In fact, that’s where it gets muddy. The Journal says that the screen size is 6 inches and that the carrier will be AT&T. Awfully conflicting stuff if it’s the same product. Our own Jose Salviati did a bit of sleuthing today and here’s what he found out Excited about the possibility of an Android based eReader from Barnes and Noble I reached out to the bookstore giant from New York. Why not go to the source, right? Unfortunately, the response from B&N was very politically-correct; no admissions, no denials. “Barnes & Noble has made no announcement about a device.” Mary Ellen Keating Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications & Public Affairs for Barnes and Noble told me. “Barnes & Noble believes that readers should have access to the books in their digital library from any device, anywhere, at anytime.” What better platform for the “anywhere, anytime” device than Android, right Mary Ellen? . With Kindle sales projected to be 1 billion in 2010 it makes sense that Barnes and Noble is at least looking at devices to get a piece of the eReader pie. Android as the platform of choice for this mystery device also makes sense. For now though the official word is mum. More to come, I’m sure. The plot thickens! The truth is out there, somewhere! Mary Ellen Keating mentioned the IREX device to me when we communicated earlier. Now, it’s always dangerous to read intent into an email but her reply only listed the IREX device along side others they intent to support. Keating did not single it out as the one they would put their name on. We are supporting many devices i.e. Plastic Logic’s forthcoming device, Irex’s new device, iphone and ipod touch, blackberry, and PCs. This is where we throw it back to you… do you think these are the same devices ? Is Android going to be part of the picture? Thanks for the tip Carl!
Here are some stream-of-consciousness thoughts on the Archos 5 Internet Tablet that arrived today at CommonsWare ’s secret mountain lair. Pros: It looks slick. The 800MHz CPU makes this device rather snappy for many operations. Flipping between settings activities and launching the Browser app, for example, are lightning-quick. The screen, visually, is very nice. This is a great size for Web browsing, for example. Cons: Touchscreen is inaccurate, even after two calibration rounds. It does not register touches all of the time, which makes scrolling through lists a serious chore. For example, when reviewing the installed applications, I wound up accidentally clicking on applications several times when I was simply trying to get it to scroll the list. The hacked status bar, offering soft keys for back, menu, and home instead of physical keys, is a bit clumsy to me, though it may be just because I am not used to it. The Amazon listing for this product claims it comes with a bunch of apps pre-installed. It does not. It comes with Twidroid and ThinkFree Office (the latter installed in firmware), and that’s it for third-party apps. As expected, it does not come with any of the Google apps for Android, as this product was (apparently) made using the Android open source project alone. However, confusingly, it does not seem to come with any sort of client for their own app market. Hence, other than by browsing to Web sites to download APKs, getting apps on this device will be a serious chore. And, since there does not appear to be a camera, Barcode Scanner and kin are out. A user’s first step would need to be to install an independent market client (AndAppStore, SlideME, etc.). Translations to English are rough in spots. Yet another incompatible USB cable. My guess is that mini-USB was too thick for this device, but it is annoying to have another cable to keep track of. FWIW, I obtained this device for experimenting with WVGA Android applications, to help advise developers on how to deal with larger screen sizes. I am not necessarily intending on using this device as an ordinary consumer would.

Computerworld recently reported that two vulnerabilities in Android have been patched by Google. The issues dealt with how Android handled SMS messages as well as the API in Android’s Dalvik virtual machine. Left un-patched, an Android device was susceptible to temporary loss of connectivity, dropped calls, lost configuration information and phone reboots. Researchers at the Open Source Computer Emergency Response Team (oCERT) disclosed the flaws found in Android 1.5. Android 1.6 (donut) included patches that addresses both issue. Nice to know there is an organization like oCERT that looks for these things and an organization like Goole that quickly addresses them!
