NEWS ANALYSIS - Google and Verizon announced a "groundbreaking" partnership Tuesday that will bring Google -powered smartphones to the nation's largest wireless carrier , finally bringing innovative devices to the country's biggest and best wireless network. Call the announcement a major victory for Google and perhaps even for openness . Think back to 2007 when Google successfully pushed the FCC, despite the strident protests of Verizon, to add openness requirements to some of the spectrum

“ UUUhhhhhhh, I am so sick of how slow my phone is! Kevin, if you can’t fix this I am selling this thing and buying an iPhone! ” These are the very words I heard come pouring into my office as a coworker, flushed with frustration, walked through the door. She not so gently placed a nice shiny MyTouch3G onto my desk as she entreated me, “I’ve had it, please fix this!” Stop. Rewind. I guess I should explain that I work in IT and a portion of what I do is to help those around me set up and utilize mobile devices that are friendly with our particular business. This ranges from Palms to Blackberries, iPhones, and even those dreaded Windows Mobile phones. Where I work, I have made a big push (a sales pitch some might say) to get more users onto Android and off the alternatives, but I digress. This isn’t the first time a newer user of Android has walked into my office red in the face and spat out the words, “It used to be really fast and now it takes forever, what’s wrong?” So, I pick up her phone, unlock it and scroll through her home screens. I spend a few minutes with it and hand it back to her. ”Should be fine now,” I say. She immediately begins playing with it and then looks up and says, “That’s amazing! What did you do?” At this point I make the mistake of launching into a pulpit speech about linux, memory, tasks, background services, intents, and so forth. Her eyes glaze over and she stops me short and says, “Well at any rate it’s working now, thanks.” To avoid your eyes glazing over, I am going to cut all the technical and semi-technical stuff and keep it simple. Below are some good tips and explanations on how to avoid a sluggish droid: Task killer . If you don’t have one, get one. Why? Android is capable (and sometimes over eager) to run applications in the background after you think you have closed them. In a lot of cases this is generally a good thing, but if you access multiple applications quickly and frequently these background processes stack up and begin consuming your Android’s memory. Most task killer applications come in a free version and are straight forward to use. Simply open the app, choose one or more processes to end and click the “kill” button and you’re done, free memory. Home screen overload. Don’t do it. Why? The more things you place onto your home screen the more memory your phone has to use to draw all the icons, picture frames, etc. every time you access the home screen (could be even worse when using home screen replacements, especially if you have more than 3 home screens) Hey, guess what’s next? Home screen replacements, be cautious, or at least stay on top of upgrading. Why? Home screen replacements aren’t bad per se; however, many of them do add in options such as new application trays and rotate features along with extra home screen panes that can slow you down. Also, if you are applying themes to them, the theme itself may not be optimized to draw icons quickly onto the home screen. You may also find that home screen replacements may not play well with certain applications and may cause you unnecessary and unwanted force closes. If you do install a home screen replacement, make sure you keep installing the updates. Read through the comments when downloading themes for home screen replacements to see if other users have experienced slowness or other problems. Widget-mania, don’t do it. Why? Again, this is one more thing your droid has to think about. Widgets are tied to processes that help refresh the widget and thus continually tax your phone’s memory. Now I’m not saying you can’t have widgets on your home screen, but just don’t cover all three sections in a sea of widgets. Some widgets have options to adjust the settings of how they operate. Explore each of your widgets to find out what you can modify in terms of refresh rates, etc. Animations and Orientation, they look cool, but turn them off. Why? Your phone needs to use processing power in order to do both. On top of everything else your droid is thinking about, it can cause slowness. My recommendation, if you don’t absolutely need it: turn it off. Caches and Histories “Hey Bro, I love you man”…That’s right, you know all those texts that you get from friends at 3 AM for whatever reason that have been stacking up over the last two months? Delete them. It’s a simple matter of house cleaning. If you simply must keep those embarrassing drunk texts or all the “ZOMGs did you see the shoes Amber wore with that dress!” texts, you can download SMS backup applications on the market that will save them to a web service. Excessive browser history and cache can also add to slowness, I recommend clearing it out on a regular basis. To do so, go into your browser > > menu > > settings > > clear cache > > clear history > > clear all cookie data. General Application overload If you haven’t figured it out by now, there is only so much memory to be passed around in Android. The more apps you have the more memory is being consumed. If you are getting down to only having around 10 mb left, there is a good chance your phone has slowed down quite a bit. To check the amount of memory currently available, from you home screen > > menu > > settings > > SD card and phone storage > > scroll down to internal phone storage > > check available space. If you are getting down to the wire, you have some options. Either decide if slowness is worth all your apps, or delete what you can live without. The other option would be to root your phone and start saving your apps on your SD card–or get an app that bypasses the necessity for root. Don’t get me wrong, you don’t necessarily have to follow all of these in order to keep your phone running fast. But, if you are experiencing slowness, you should maybe look to see if there is something on this list that you could be doing better on. This is simply a general list of things that I notice on new users’ phones that really brings them to a stand-still. (Especially when you are guilty of all of them at once!) I understand that everyone’s experience of their Android phone and what they use it for is different; however, the more you give your droid to think about at once, the less efficiently it thinks. If you remember this very general rule, you are most likely going to be able to trouble shoot or tweak things on your own to be back in tip-top shape in no time.

It’s been more than eighteen months since Microsoft pushed Windows Mobile 6.1 out of the door, itself a relatively minor update to a smartphone platform dating back to February 2007. In that time, Apple have shaken the smartphone segment to its core with the iPhone, Google and Palm have launched Android and webOS respectively, and so-called feature-phones have punctuated a consumer market ever-more mature in its mobile demands. So, is 6.5 a legitimate release, or just a stopgap half-measure on

Well, tonight after Palm pushed out the first paid webOS applications, less than two weeks after joining Palm the amazing duo has announced updates to Palm’s webOS development platform.
I tell you what, I love me some Google Reader. One of the first things I did when I got my phone was set up a shortcut to Reader’s mobile interface . It’s fairly robust, but it is in the browser, so it’s a little slow even on WiFi. On Edge, it’s unbearable. And forget about offline access. What I needed was an app. But now that there are several to choose from, I’m still using that shortcut to the browser. Why? They are 3rd party apps that ask for my Google login information. I’m sure these developers are nice folks and not the least bit interested in identity theft, but I just can’t get past the idea of giving them access to not only my primary email account (Gmail), not only confidential documents (Google Docs), but also the power to spend my money (Google Checkout). Let’s take a look at a few apps I’d really like to use, but won’t. Greed was the first Google Reader app I came across. A friend of mine recommended it to me. He loves it. I won’t use it, because it asks for my Google login information. And dude, it’s called Greed. Doesn’t exactly make me feel great about giving the app my login info. NewsRob was the next Reader app I found. It gets great reviews. I have no doubt that it’s wonderful. But I won’t use it, because it asks for my Google login information. The latest Reader app I won’t use is Talking RSS Reader , which uses a synthesized voice to speak items from your Google Reader feeds to you. I thought it’d be nice to use in the car. But it wants my Google login info, so I won’t be using it. It goes beyond Google Reader, of course. I’d love to use GDocs for Android to access my Google Docs. But I won’t. You know why by now, right? mAnalytics is one of several apps out there that allow you to keep track of your Google Analytics account on your Android phone. I, of course, will not use any of them. So whose fault is this? I know, many of you might say it’s my fault. I’m just being paranoid. I should stop worrying and learn to love giving out my Google login info. Some might say it’s Google’s fault, for making the same password that gets you into Reader also work for Gmail and Checkout. But that integration is a feature, too, and Google does support OAuth. I hate to lay the blame on developers, but wouldn’t it be great if, the first time you opened an app like NewsRob, it took you to a page on Google’s servers in the browser to authorize the app? I admit, my knowledge is pretty incomplete here, and there may be reasons why you can’t use OAuth for these purposes. But even failing OAuth, there is another way. Let’s look at a couple more apps: little ol’ Reader Widget Small , and its big brother, Reader Widget Pro . Both are widgets that provide basic info about your Google Reader account (number of unread items and recent headlines). Both use “Automatic authorization against Google Reader API,” so no login information is required. In other words, my phone is already hooked up with my Google account, and this app takes advantage of that to eliminate the need for users to turn over the keys to their house to some guy who says he won’t take anything. I’m sure I’m not the only one who is concerned about this sort of thing. I have to think there’s an audience out there for apps that access various Google services without requiring users to provide login info. What do you think? Am I being paranoid, or just appropriately cautious? And if you’re a developer with some insight into hurdles I’m unaware of, please let me know in the comments. Update: The developer of ReaderScope, one of those Google Reader apps that I would not use, took this post to heart and pushed an update out today that enables auto-login. Credentialing works the same as in the Reader Widget apps, and there’s also the option to supply login info if your Reader login is different than the one associated with your phone. In his post about the update , he also explains that Google only supports OAuth for webapps, not for mobile or desktop apps, and that the solution he did use is not perfect: it will only work on “Google experience” phones. I tested it out and auto-login worked perfectly. The app seems nice, though I’ve not had a chance yet to put it through its paces. So, I now have a Google Reader app I can use. That’s wonderful, but the larger issue remains.

T-Mobile G1 and myTouch 3G Android smartphone users are getting the OTA Over-The-Air update, Android OS 1.6 also known as “Donut.” The update will be coming to T-Mobile customers in the coming days, announced a T-Mobile spokesman. When you get it depends on how and where they push it out. They usually push out updates on weekends to not affect business customers. The Android 1.6 update offers new features, improvements and fixes a glitch that rebooted phones after dialing 911. N

And it seems like the folks at Apple are trying to launch a new mapping service soon by making use of Pushpin to compete with map leader – Google Maps. What’s more is that Jaron Waldman, founder and CEO of Placebase is a member of Apple Geo Team. Apple Geo Team? Is that the “Apple Maps” team? Oh yes, it is and they are working on

This article is a guest-blogger response to a previously posted opinion piece entitled “ Do I Really Want a Swiss Army Phone ? ” written by one of our staff members. Not that many years ago, when I went on business trips I used to carry a whole host of devices. Cell phone, media player, GPS, PDA, digital camera, plus a few smaller items (like WiFi detector). Taken together, they took up half my bag – and although I did my best to consolidate their various power requirements, batteries and chargers added quite a bit more. Now, guess what? Nine times out of ten, I just take my G1. Sure, if I need to do serious work on the road a laptop will come along, but for many minor tasks – including email and web surfing – I’m happy with the handset. As an Android enthusiast, it’s hardly surprising that I love my “Swiss Army Phone,” but on a practical level it has also really lightened my load. I’m not arguing that my G1 does everything better than all of those. It will always be the case that a top-notch, optimized specialist is better at its one job than a generalist is. For example, when I go out running I like my tunes, so I wear an old (but tiny) Qoolqee X – and when it dies, a new Sports Walkman is in my sights. I’d never take my G1 running. But the rest of the time, I’m not that much of a media junkie, and I’m perfectly happy with Android’s default player. It’s taken the place of other player hardware for me, in no small part because I always have it with me. Which brings me to the other reason why an Android handset is the convergent device of choice: If you don’t like the media player (or any other app), you can change it! The Market has a bunch of player options, SlideMe has more, and of course, if push comes to shove you can even build your own. It’s as if you could replace the crappy scissors on your Swiss Army knife with a Fiskars, or the knife blade with a Henckel, or the awl you never use with a Torx driver that’s just the size you need. A Swiss Android Phone? Yes please! PS: For old-school hardware, skip the Swiss Army knife and go with a Leatherman. ;^)

Motorola has dominated the Android headlines this week and they hope to dominate the smartphone wars this holiday shopping season. We already know the T-Mobile Cliq is shipping October 19 , but what about their other phone? For months we have been reporting on the Motorola Sholes and this week people started calling it the Motorola Tao. I was unable to confirm the Tao name with my inside sources, but I’ve seen enough sites reporting on the name that we are going to stick with it. This week we received a mysterious letter from our new tip line . The document describes an upcoming phone headed for Verizon Wireless and all the specs match up with the Sholes specs we leaked back in August. The name of the phone is conveniently missing and has been replaced by the letters “XXX”. Could this represent the the three letters of Tao or just be a place holder for another name? Call it whatever you like, but this is the “other” Motorola phone that everyone has been waiting for. The letter confirms several of the features we have been talking about, but there are several new additions not seen anywhere else. Read it over and let us know what you think. I want this phone. Keep in mind that these companies have a history of pushing back release dates, but the letter says the phone will be available December 1, 2009. I hope this information is correct, but I would not be surprised if it slips to 2010.

I just got an notification from Android Market informing me I had several apps that needed to be updated. I went to check which apps had a new version and found T-Mobile My Account had been updated to 2.0.3. According to the release notes, this new version was targeted specifically to support the new Android 1.6 (Donut). Over the past couple of weeks we have seen Google deliver the Android 1.6 SDK then HTC released the Android 1.6 images for developer phones. Some sites are interpreting the update of My Account to mean that T-Mobile is ready to roll out Android 1.6. Tmonews even goes as far to say the Android 1.6 over the air update is coming at midnight. Based on the history of the Android 1.5 rollout from T-Mobile, I think we still have several weeks to wait. It’s nice to see T-Mobile update their apps to work with the latest update, but many developers have not tested their apps and there are compatibility issues. Android Market Support typically sends an email out to developers before any rollouts occur and they have not done so for Android 1.6. T-Mobile could surprise everyone and push the update out tonight, but I’m not holding my breath. For those of you wondering about the article we wrote claiming the G1 might not get future updates , we have good news. As I explained in my G1 storage problem article, the Android 1.5 (Cupcake) update consumed 99.5% of the space available for the operating system. The system partition of the G1 is about 70 MB and Android 1.5 used around 69 MB. I’ve had the chance to install and play with developers version of Android 1.6 and it only uses 60 MB. This means the Google engineers were able to shave off around 10 MB of code with new optimizations. The final T-Mobile version of Android 1.6 will be slightly larger when they add their MyFaves and IM apps, but it should have no problem fitting on the G1. And now the wait begins. T-Mobile prepares for Donut.

The No. 2 US wireless carrier has been pushing mobile applications through their on-deck AT&T Media Mall for longer than Apple ( NSDQ: AAPL ) has been selling the iPhone, and it seems AT&T wants to make a mobile app comeback. To that end, Big Blue has just acquired mobile app developer Plusmo. What’s the big deal? Plusmo is in the business of making it easy

You smell that? We’re beginning to detect a hint of donut essence. We get the feeling that we’re going to be seeing the 1.6 rollout any day now. We received an email from one of our readers pointing out a recent update to the T-Mobile MyAccount application. He noticed that the app was showing as Update Available today so he decided to see what it was all about. “Seeing as to how good the app already was I was interested as to how it could get any better. So I took a look to see what the update was for and it was strictly to support the 1.6 update.” Now we all know the SDK has been available for developers for some time now, and that the ADP1 got its Donut update this week. The Sprint Hero is due out in a matter of weeks so it would not surprise us to see all these handsets getting the OS boost to level things across the board. Why would T-Mobile push out an update before Android 1.6 was released? Are they being timed to coincide with each other? Any one of these things is not enough to say definitively that it’s going to happen tonight or tomorrow, but taken as a whole, we think the stars are aligning. The burning question on G1 owner’s minds of whether or not they’ll get the update will be answered soon enough. Don’t be surprised if you wake up any day now and find that little notification we’ve all come to love. Thanks Alex!

Last weekend, I went to Imperial College for Over The Air : a conference for mobile developers. I gave a talk at the event on how to write a mobile application that uses push notifications. It was pretty well received, so I’d thought I’d share it here, too. I’ve made some notes below to cover roughly what I said at the event. Any comments or questions (or corrections if you spot any!) are very welcome.
The whole Cyanogen ROM brouhaha has seen a whipsawing set of emotions from all corners of the Android ecosystem. Directly, I have no horse in this race, insofar as I do not use Cyanogen ROMs and have no near-term plans to do so — I need factory-fresh devices in order to develop and teach development on the standard platform. The good news is that Cyanogen seems to be shifting gears towards making a ROM free from proprietary bits, that would then blend with proprietary bits from a user’s device to form a fully-functional personal ROM. While this is a bit less of an explored territory from a legal perspective, it’s undoubtedly better than shipping unlicensed proprietary bits. It also appears that Google has opened up a better line of communication to Cyanogen. Assuming things went down as originally depicted (”cease and desist” relatively out of the blue), that was ham-handed, but par for the course for the legal departments of big corporations. I’ll have more thoughts on what should be done on the communications front in a post in Monday’s Android Angle column on NetworkWorld, where I usually put my unsolicited (and frequently unheeded) advice to Google. My concern is with the visceral and hate-filled reaction from some members of the community over the original cease-and-desist and to some of Google’s explanations . The anger is misplaced. The problem is not that Google is trying to stop redistribution of proprietary bits: the problem is that we need some of those bits in the first place. The Vision In July 2009, a mobile carrier based in the United Arab Emirates pushed out an update to some 100,000 Blackberry users that contained spyware , designed to monitor and report on email messages. Whether this spyware was put into the patch by accident, by a decision from the mobile carrier, or by orders from the UAE government, is not clear. Call me crazy, but I’m not a big fan of this. I long for the day when I can have a quality consumer-grade mobile communications device in my pocket, whose firmware has been vetted against spyware by groups with my interests at heart (e.g., EFF), and that contains the requisite software to allow me to keep my data and communications as free from interception as I choose. Then, and only then, will motivated mobile users be secure that the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated . Android might be the OS powering that device. It, along with an open source Symbian, are really the only two current possibilities, since we really need end-to-end open source to feel as confident as possible that there are no backdoors or malware lurking about, and open source alternatives either lack the hardware support or are not designed for smartphones with user-chosen apps. If you want a fight worth fighting for, consider liberty sometime. Not everyone has it, even in nations that claim it as part of their mission statement. Liberty is particularly relevant now, since the very thing that hung up Cyanogen is what prevents Android from fulfilling its portion of the liberty vision: proprietary bits. Achieving the Vision Google could have easily backed away from the Android ecosystem over the reaction to the Cyanogen incident. In many ways, I couldn’t even blame them — what major corporation would willingly try to assist a bile-spewing community? There are easier ways to turn a buck than to open employees up to attack . Beyond whatever communications that have gone on between Google and Cyanogen in the past 48 hours, at least one Googler is pushing forward. Jean-Baptiste Queru (JBQ), in the midst of the hate, renewed a call to get the open source Android to be capable of powering an Android device without modifications. The goal is simultaneously modest (one Android version, one device) and challenging (lots of proprietary entanglements amidst the open source code). This goes along with other existing fragmented initiatives along similar lines. Once that is done, we still need to replace proprietary drivers with open source equivalents (as has been done many a time on Linux), ensure there will be access to freely-distributable app markets with robust contents, and so on. Having a hardware vendor in our corner would help, though I can only think of one consumer device manufacturer with a truly strong track record with open source hardware. Complain all you wish about how the Google Android applications should be freely downloadable or whatnot. But, if you are going to get seriously agitated, consider directing those energies towards something that has a chance of making a difference in society. Heaven knows we could use the help.

..because I don’t think we will ever see Google itself manufacture a handset for Android. One of the pieces of buzz right now is how people are wishing that Google would be like Apple and create a piece of hardware that will run the Android system at its best. While I would LOVE to see that, we have to remember that Google is not in the hardware business, but the search industry. Now before you go off citing different products that Google does make, hear me out. Google at it’s core is a search company- everything they do is geared towards generating revenue for itself through keywording as it relates to advertising. The genius in their multi-layered plan is that Google layers their core business value behind dead useful applications that users simply fall in love with. ALL of those applications are geared towards targeting advertising towards those users in an unassuming but right in front of you way. If any of you have ever used gmail you will know what I mean. When you are reading one of your emails, you see ads that are targeted at the keywords in the title of your email, and in your body text that is sent to you. It is pretty ingenious, and makes Google a lot of money. This is not some nefarious plan; It is simply a “give and take” business model that I think is really not a bad one. They give us some great applications, we give them our attention and info. Apply that thinking to the Android platform. They (Google) feed keywords to you, and then in turn, you feed those to advertisers who are going to pay you to target certain individuals. Would you not be looking for ways to get your applications and search engine into as many people’s hands as possible? Of course! This is EXACTLY what Google is doing with Android. I think that Google has created a business model where they are seeking for users to be using Android without even knowing it. They want the Android experience to be almost transparent, like using Google in your web browser is now. When you want to search something, you go to Google. It is second nature. Google wants you to start doing that with your data enabled smart phone. Look at the scads of phones that are coming out with Android installed. Every major manufacturer has jumped on board and are hard at work creating the killer handset. From a business standpoint, using Android makes incredible sense. It’s easily obtainable, open source and there’s very little investment risk into putting the OS on their equipment. Couple that with the power of Google as a company and you have a no-brainer. Google provides them with a promising platform that a lot of people are excited about and will sell handsets. What does Google get? Think about it. Google gets you using their products constantly. You search, read emails, use Google voice, and more. It tracks your movements through maps, and it keeps track of what types of places you are searching for when you are looking for directions. What does Google get? A TREASURE TROVE of info. Every single second they get access to your habits in spending, listening, emailing and searching. This makes it that much easier to target you as an individual for advertising. Essentially, Google is looking to get Android into as many hands as possible so that they can continue expanding their core function – search. I think our desire for an Android handset that runs fast and smooth comes from looking at the iPhone. Admittedly, the iPhone is a great piece of hardware. With the iPhone, you have a great unit. One that is an Apple built piece of hardware that pushes the OS to it’s limits. With this great piece of equipment comes a HEAVY price tag of development. Hence why the unit is pricey. Yes, it’s coming down, that is for sure, but the newest versions are still up there. Apple needs to recoup their investment and expand their business. Google on the other hand, has VERY little monetary risk to recoup, and will make what they do have invested back through advertising pretty quickly. I think that we will continue to see the Android foot print expanding as the different carriers work hard to bring an iPhone-like experience to an Android handset. We will see Google focus on the different branches of updates, continue merging all their services with Android, making their applications more accessible to the handsets that are using the OS. The end result being Android for the masses. These masses will then return the favor with a wealth of information to Google. Information which enriches their advertising strategy, in turn continuing to fuel them with money. Google is a for profit business. Their profit comes when you use their products. They don’t want to build the best handset for their Android platform, they want as many people as possible using their product. Don’t hold your breath for Google to make you a sweet handset, you will certainly lose.
